Hello I am new to LIF
I posted this on a topic earlier but but I need help!!
Iam new to this board. I have been lurking for the last few weeks.
I have been teaching for the last 6 years in a private school on LI. I must say that I don't make anywhere near what most of you make.
I have been trying to get into the public schools for the last few years but no luck. It seems like as soon as they see that I teach in a private school they don't want me.
Any advice???? I need to make more money so that I can have a family!!!

Re: Hello I am new to LIF
As far as getting a public school job, I'd say just get your info out there. I know there are some very ambitious ladies on this board who've worked hard to get jobs, so they may have the best advice for you. What are your certs?

Re: Hello I am new to LIF
Hi and Welcome! I'm in the same situation as you. I work in a Catholic school (5th year) and would love to/ tried to get into the public schools. I haven't even scored an interview. I wonder if it's because i only taught in a Catholic School?? I'm getting married and would LOVE to make more money at this point in my life. Fingers crossed for all of us in this situation, if not this year hopefully next year!!

I don't know for sure but i honestly think it is because we work for a catholic school. I have been on interviews but they are very hard to come by. I am glad that I am not alone! I thought it was only me.
I am hoping that next year things will look up. We are hoping to buy a house next year and it's hard to do on Catholic school salary.

I hope things look up too. I began teaching in a Catholic school b/c i couldn't get into a public school b/c i only had my BS. Well now i have permanent certification and im certified in Reading and i have my Masters and im still having trouble!! That really stinks that teaching in a Catholic school for these years to get my experience is holding me back from being in a public school and making more money.

I don't understand why Catholic Schools are looked down on.. They follow the same standards. you would think that any experience would be a plus..
I guess looking for this year is out since we go back in 2 weeks. I hope next year brings a new job!

Re: Hello I am new to LIF
When is the best time to send out resumes? I have been sending them out in February but is that too early?
Do you send resumes to school districts even though they have those online applications?

Re: Hello I am new to LIF
I started sending in Jan/Feb, but it can't hurt to send again to the ones you really like--and you never know, sometimes schools really do call months later--I got calls in June and July for resumes I sent out in March!
Good luck to you, and WELCOME to the boards!!

Re: Hello I am new to LIF
Welcome
Have you tried the city? Two of my girlfriends who strictly had catholic school experience got jobs in the city first time they tried....and the city accepted all their catholic school years to place them at a higher salary step
Good Luck
