Hello Middle Eastern Foodies...Labne Help
I have had Labne before at a friends and I cannot remember what I ate it on. Tonight I was at the kosher supermarket in town and they had so many kinds of Labne...olive, plain, garlic. What am I getting and what am I eating it on? Any help?
Can I eat the plain one with fruit? Crackers? I'm wondering...

We get the plain...spread it on a small plate...drizzle olive oil on it and zahatar seasoning. We dip toasted pita bread in it...YUMMY

Re: Hello Middle Eastern Foodies...Labne Help
For those of you how have never heard of or tried Labne, I justed looked it up: it is a dense yogurt eaten in Syria and Lebanon. It's not as tangy as many of the Greek yogurts, but it has the same thick texture. You can flavor it with crushed mint and olive oil. It can be a substitute for sour cream. Try it over bread with sliced cucumbers and tomatoes, olive oil and maras pepper. This person recommends pairing it with zaatar bread ( ).
Any recommendations on a Middle Eastern restaurant in the East Meadow, Levvitown, Bethpage, Hicksville, or Massapequa area?

Re: Hello Middle Eastern Foodies...Labne Help
Thank you for that!! I live in Great Neck and there are tons of Israeli, Persian and Syrian families. There is a new Kosher Market in town, Shop Delight and they have everything you can imagine. Numberous times of Labne! I have to get some.
I just want to know what else I'm eating it on other than pita but if it's olive or zaatar, I figured I can dip vegies in it too.

Oh yes, I went to a Lebanese place for lunch the other day, and they call is Yogurt Cheese. Its just Greek Yogurt left in cheesecloth to drain! Surely you could do it at home...I did ask him how he made it. I have some Greek Yog at home, I am going to try it this weekend.

I used full fat yogurt, however I assume it would work with low fat. I made another batch with Fage last night, will let you know how it turns out.

Re: Hello Middle Eastern Foodies...Labne Help
I loveeeee Labne. I usually put some on a plate, top w/EVOO,salt and pepper and scoop it up with pita bread. Sometimes I mix green olives in with it too.You could also cut up a tomato and cucumber sprinkle w/S&P and dip that too. Sooo good!!!
