I would try to pick it up and put it in the nest in a plant or safe area for the birds to get to it......

Where are you located? In Smithtown, there is Sweetbriar, where you can drop off orphaned or injured birds. FM if you are near Smithtown and I will give you the address/directions.

ETA: If you can reach the nest, put the baby back in.

If you move the nest or mess with it, the liklihood of the adult returning is slim, and the baby will starve.

I think the only way this baby will survive is being hand reared by a professsional, so call that foundation or your local vet. (my husband's practice is pretty successful at rearing baby birds), but the Star Foundation is probably best at this type of thing.

i brought a pigeon into massapequa pet vet on merrick road in massapequa and they tried to help it but it did not make it. I think all they ask you to do is give a donation to the organization that helps wildlife. sorry i don't have the telephone number handy.

Thanks everyone --- one was dead so I wrapped it in paper and threw it out. Chat Icon

The other I picked up with a gloved hand and put him back in the nest....after reading this:

Featherless or Downy Baby Birds

If you come across a baby bird out of its nest, the best thing that you can do is try locating the nest in surrounding trees and shrubs and place the nestling back in it. If you cannot locate the nest you can create a "makeshift" nest out of a clean container such as a margarine dish. Make holes in the bottom of it to allow for water drainage, then line the bowl with paper towels. Tack the makeshift nest back up in the tree as close to the original nest as possible. Finally, place the baby bird (s) into this and leave. The parents will usually come back in a short time to feed the nestlings. It's a misconception that if you touch a baby animal, especially a bird, that the mother will abandon the infant for good. This is not the case, as birds in general have a poor sense of smell (except for vultures) and will not mind the fact that you have handled them. They will, however, be bothered by your presence around the babies.
