Help - Couch won't fit in the door .... with an update!!
We are almost done moving everything into our house, since we've been doing everything gradually. Yesterday DH and I were able to all the furniture in except for our couch, which is currently in our garage. We also measured the back door, which is smaller than the front, so that won't work either.
My question is, a co-worker mentioned we should try taking off the molding around the door and hopefully then it would fit. Is this just as easy as taking it down and nailing the same piece back up, or is it much more complicated than that? I feel like this is such a stupid question, but I am so clueless when it comes to this stuff.
ETA: Ok, we feel like total idiots. One of our amazing new neighbors came over and literally, got the couch in the door in under 5 minutes!!! No door removal required or anything. He said he's had a lot of experience doing this, so he can picture in his head which way will work to get it in. I felt like such an a$$!! But, hey, the couch is in and we have some awesome neighbors so it's all good. Thanks again everyone for all your suggestions!

I would try to take the door off of the hinges before I removed the molding. Have you measurethe couch and the doorway? How big are each?

Does the couch have legs? If so, take those off, take the door off, also is it a really puffy couch?

Re: Help - Couch won't fit in the door!
We measured the couch length-wise, height, width, diagonally...everything. Every measurement is too big to fit through the door. The couch has a solid wood frame all around it, and the legs are not removable. Here is a pic of the couch: Unfortunately it's not like a typical couch that is all padded so you could try and squeeze it through.

How about standing up on one side on a 90 degree angel? Is the doorway tall enough to fit the couch? How about a large window in the house? GL!

The couch is too tall for the doorway, by about an inch!! We tried tilting it different ways and still nothing. Also, we don't have any larger windows in the house, so that won't work either. I know in the big picture this is such a small, tiny thing, but it's driving me nuts! LOL.

I feel so bad for you guys!
Can you ask your BIL? He might know how to pull down the molding and put it back up quick or how to take the door down easily.

There are some companies that I know a lot of people in the city use where they actually take apart the couch and put it back together and you would have no idea. I think it is kind of expensive, but it works.

I heard of this too, I think is called Dr. Couch or something like that, they cut the couch and then put it back together

Damn! Maybe taking the door down the moulding will just work enough so you can get it in the house. GL!

Re: Help - Couch won't fit in the door!
Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I tried calling my brother, who mentioned that taking down the door moulding would be a big PITA and that we should try removing the door first and see if that works. If that doesn't work, we'll probably just get a new couch and try and sell or donate this one. DH isn't in love with this couch so he would probably be happy to get a new one, but I wanted to avoid spending the extra $$.
Thanks again!!!

I think S has one in storage that I'm sure she'd let you use.

Re: Help - Couch won't fit in the door!
My brother actually took his windows out of his house and moved his couch in, then reinstalled the windows. He says if he moves, he's taking a chain saw to the couch because he isn't taking it with him after the three kids.

Re: Help - Couch won't fit in the door!
This annoys the hell out of me...happened to us too, but luckily the couch had feet that were able to come off...
Why they heck to they make couches that don't fit through standard sized doors?????

Re: Help - Couch won't fit in the door!
I had to take the door and molding off the laundry room door to get the washer/dryer in. It's not that hard.

Re: Help - Couch won't fit in the door!
Honestly, this was a factor in me getting double doors for the front of the house....
Since the frame seems mainly exposed, are there any screws that you can undo? Sometimes just taking off or even loosening the littlest piece can make a big difference.

Re: Help - Couch won't fit in the door!
We had to take our door of the hinge too, in order to get our couch OUT of our apartment and into our new house. I don't know how the hell they got it in there in the first place.
We still did have to tilt the couch so it looked like < instead of L. Know what I mean? We also had to go at it at an angle to get the feet/arms in, straight through, and then tilt the other way to get the other feet/arms in.
Not fun. I'm sorry this happened! This is why I always, always, always measure my doorways before we buy furniture from now on. At least it will never happen again, right?
Something else I learned... Doors and doorways are not standard! We have like 3 different doorway sizes in our house.
Btw, love the couch.

Re: Help - Couch won't fit in the door!
Taking the door off the hinge would be the easier option. Just pull the pins out. You may need a flathead screwdriver and a hammer to lightly tap the hinge upward. This may help. We had a refrigerator delivered recently and had to do this. It worked well.
Also, a couple of years ago we were faced with the same situation as yours. At that time I asked a question via the site below, providing our couch and door measurements and Harry Lipsky at the site below responded with suggestions. He can even tell you if you flat out of luck providing you supply the correct measurements. I know it sounds crazy but his suggestion worked for us.
