Re: Help - im hosting xmas eve - what should the menu be?
Well, my mom does turkey or chicken in the oven. We make homemade mashed potatoes, pasta salad, and green salad. I'll be making an apple crisp for dessert. I have an awesome recipe for mashed potatoes. FM me if you want it. Good luck!

Re: Help - im hosting xmas eve - what should the menu be?
We usually have more people than that...but generally it's one macaroni (either baked ziti, penne alla vodka, manicotti, stuffed shells, etc), one chicken (either franchaise<--usually, parmigiana, marsala), a meat (either spiral ham, sliced steak), always paella, salad, and bread.
What have you eaten at your relatives houses? Do you have a dish that you make really well?

Re: Help - im hosting xmas eve - what should the menu be?
Is the family Italian? It seems alot of Italians do fish, fish and more fish on Christmas Eve.
I take it you were not told ahead of time to do fish, fish, fish?

We're Italian so the only thing I've ever had on x-mas eve is fish fish and more fish.
Whatever you cook don't make it too complicated. Remember to enjoy!

Re: Help - im hosting xmas eve - what should the menu be?
We usually do the a Fish Dinner...and some sort of pasta...no MEAT on Christmas Eve.
My sister usually does Christmas Eve because her and her husband are chefs and make unbelievable sauces for the fish.
She also does dinner buffet style because usually eveyone has to work and gets to the house at different times...so she puts all the food in chaving dishes to keep it warm...and as eveyone arrives they fix themselves a plate.
by the time we are ready for dessert everyone is at the house...so we all sit around the table together for that.

We are Italian & my family has Chinese food on Christmas Eve! We never really celebrated it--The 4 of us just got something quick in between cookinf for Christmas day.
I may be having MIL & FIL over & I dont' know what to make.
I'm thinking maybe pork tenerloin. On previous Christmas eves we'd have steaks at FIL's mother's house & Sandwhiches ( sometimes with a ham) at MIL's parents' house.

Re: Help - im hosting xmas eve - what should the menu be?
thanks ladies.... this gives me such a starting point - ive never done this before and wasnt sure...
it will be my family and DH (his family is down in florida) we normally do the lasagna thing - but DH is very italian and is used to "everything fish" on xmas eve - so would like to start that again..
my family isnt that into fish so i will have to do a bit of each......
thanks for the help and please keep the ideas coming

Re: Help - im hosting xmas eve - what should the menu be?
We do this with my in laws and we do all cocktail party style food. One thing that my MIL makes since my nephew has food allergies is mini sausages in a sweet sauce that actually cook and sre served in a crockpot. We make zuuccini pie(bisquick-this is so good) fresh mozzarella and tomato, etc.
