HELP - Our tree fell and now we have neighbors!
We had a huge tree that screened us from the neighbors. Their deck is on the second floor (it's a rental) and so every single thing is VISIBLE and AUDIBLE. We plan to plant trees in the spring - maybe make a berm and plant arborvitae, but until then, and until they grow, any ideas on how to get our privacy back??
They have a barking dog, and teenagers that listen to loud music and hang out with friends until all hours of the night - on the deck. Dad is learning to play electric guitar - on the deck. They are always out there, rain or shine, winter, summer... you get the idea...
Our fence is 6' - up to code. We can't go higher -- what to do???
Sorry I can't ge tthe picture any bigger... Image Attachment(s):

My cousin just did this ... can you make a 3' or 4' retaining wall (wide enough to plant trees) around the property and plant 6' trees on the Wall? Expensive yes, but worth your sanity maybe?

Sounds like a good idea. You can even build your own retaining wall if you were handy.

We just planted trees. In warm weather the best time to plant is between Aug 15 and Sept 15.

This is what DH wants to do - build a retaining wall, fill it, and plant arborvitae (evergreens) as tall as we can get them.... we though we'd do it in the spring - that way we can burn that huge woodpile that is in the way over the winter. But I don't want to see them NOW.

Kara, I would recommend talking to someone at a nursery about what types of trees to plant (and how much space to leave around them.) Tree roots have a way of getting into everything around them. I would hate to see you do all that work and then have the wall start failing because of the roots growing through it.
I would also double check the town code on whether or not there are restricitons about what can go on top of a retaining wall.

Re: HELP - Our tree fell and now we have neighbors!
who said you can't plant til spring?
The Fall is a great time to plant, the ground is still warm into the winter and then they can go dormant.
Call your local nursery!
ETA: I see you want to use your wood pile... maybe chop all the wood and move to the side of the yard, you might even be able to sell some!

LOL -- oh we CHOPPED it all -- the whole tree -- and MOVED it all to the side...unfortunately to just where the trees need to go! Plus the wood from a tree we lost 3 years ago. I want to put it on craigs list - free firewood, just come and get it - but DH says he wants to keep it...

look into leyland cypresses - they are beautiful evergreens that I believe grow really quickly.

Re: HELP - Our tree fell and now we have neighbors!
I'm pretty sure shrubs & youngs trees are best planted in the early fall, like now. We planted fast growing bamboo in one section where we can see the neighbor. I know we might regret it someday but for now its working great.

Re: HELP - Our tree fell and now we have neighbors!
I am afraid of bamboo -- but I bet it works great!! Just afraid it will take over.
I posted my free firewood about 20 minutes ago and already have about 10 replies!! LOL, I should have sold it!!
