Help! DD BFs for 60+ minutes per session and STILL isn't satisfied...
DD is 5 weeks. I've been pumping more than nursing but I'm trying to change my ways. My ped told me not to go past 45 minutes to save my sanity and throw her a bottle of breast milk or formula if she still wants more.
Today I'm running an experiment to see exactly how long she would go... test #1 was 65 minutes! And I still needed to give her a few ounces!!
What is UP with this? Am I doing something wrong? Does she officially have <Gasp!> nipple confusion? She appears to be actively sucking and I can see milk in her mouth.. is she just lazy?

I had babies who were slow eaters. They got quicker as time went on. Could she just be using you for comfort? Or to indues sleep? I would try another test_ nurse 15 min on each side then vie her a bottle. How much does she drink after nursing. If she is not taking a lot of ounces she may just want the comfort. Maybe a paci

Re: Help! DD BFs for 60+ minutes per session and STILL isn't satisfied...
that was me, and DS would not take a paci
he did doubled his weight and gained 3" in by month 2. I also gave up by month 2. I'm very very sorry I did, but I was loosing my mind.
I wish I had an answer for you, I don't. Maybe talk to an LC, and if they don't help, find another LC.

I agree that she may just be sucking for comfort, even if she is still taking the bottle afterwards. Try the pacifier!

DD is like this, as you know and it drives me bonkers. I just BF so she doesn't forget how and then give her the bottle.
She only takes a pacifier in the car seat, I know it sounds stupid but I swear its true! She sucks her thumb, but she still looks for more milk.
IDK, I was not much help LOL

As long as she is gaining weight, I would nurse for 15 minutes on each side and then give the paci. Hope it works!

I think she's using you as her pacifier. Have you given one yet?

I agree with all of the PPs who said that she is using you as a pacifier. I doubt she is still hungry. DD did (and still does) comfort nurse. Introduce a paci if you have not. Cuddle her, do whatever it takes to divert her attention. Try to break the habit so you don't wind up like me, with a comfort nursing 7 month old (although we are much better here with it!)

DD was a comfort nurser and sounds like you have one too. Try the pacifier they gave in the hospital. Its closest to the nipple and that saved my life....and my nips

Interesting...!
I guess I was nervous to give her a pacifier because it would hide the hunger signs she might want to give me.
I'll try the 15 mins each side and a pacifier and see how it goes...
My nipples thank you!

Re: Help! DD BFs for 60+ minutes per session and STILL isn't satisfied...
My DS's max was 90 minute per session (but that was at least 3 times a day, EVERY day ). He was chained to my boob for the first 8 weeks until my ped told me it had to stop. He had gained over 5lbs in those first 2 months and grew 4.5"!!!
What my ped said to do was limit it to 20 minutes on each side, and then try and distract him until the next feeding 2 hours later (start to start). We kept changing activities (swing, bouncy, mobile, tummy time, etc) until it was time for his next feeding. My boobs weren't filling up because he was always on them, and he was never satisfied. It took 3 feedings for him to figure it out and then he was eating 40 minutes max every 2 hours. Within 2 weeks he went to every 3 hours and 15 minutes on each side.

Interesting! I guess this goes against the whole "you always have milk available for them" theory I see here and there on diehard BFing websites!

Re: Help! DD BFs for 60+ minutes per session and STILL isn't satisfied...
That was DD until I went to the lactation consultant who helped me realize that she wasn't really sucking...she was making the movement with her mouth but wasn't swallowing.
The advice she gave me was 15-20 min per side (I ended up not following this b/c I started to block feed) and to watch and listen for her swallows. When she slowed down on swallowing and only started to do the little "baby" sucks, to pull her off b/c she was likely done. With her now, I know she can feed in about 20 minutes and drain a side. Very rarely is she still hungry and I have to put her on the other side.
I would definitely try the pacifier. Sometimes they just want to comfort suck!

Just because your breasts don't feel full doesn't mean they aren't making milk. My breasts NEVER feel full, yet he always gets a full feeding.
When your LO nurses, are you switching sides or staying on one side? I wouldn't be limiting nursing to 15 minutes per side as you want to make sure DC gets the hindmilk (which is more filling as it's full of fat). At 5 weeks they're still pretty inefficient at nursing, so it takes longer to drain the breast.
If there is active sucking and swallowing, then your LO is eating, so I wouldn't use the paci. Once the sucking slows to almost a munching and you don't hear any swallowing, then switch to a paci, as that's just comfort suckling.
My second DD was a VORACIOUS eater. She didn't take a full hour to nurse, but she would nurse every 2 hours (even at night). I felt like she was camped out on my breasts for her first 5 months, so i feel your pain.

Re: Help! DD BFs for 60+ minutes per session and STILL isn't satisfied...
Just reread and realized she'll take additional ounces after eating from you. Perhaps you should contact a lactation consultant. She'll be able to monitor your latch and will weigh your baby to see how much she's taking in per session.

I always had milk available for DS, but he was grazing all day. So he would never get full from the grazing, he was always hungry 20 minutes later. Once I started feeding him 20 minutes on each side and waited 2 hours to feed him again, it gave him a chance for my boobs to fill up and him to drain them, giving him a full belly. He was gaining too much because he was eating literally ALL DAY, so he was definitely getting the hindmilk. I have always made just enough for DS (nothing extra), so at every feeding he pretty much drains both sides.
