Help for a homeless teenager
I have a friend at work who's daughter's boyfriend is now homeless. He went to DSS and they put him up in a shelter in Wyandanch. He is scared out of his mind. Does anyone know of any missions or agencies that can help this kid get temporary housing in a safe area. We are in Suffolk county.
Thanks so much.

Re: Help for a homeless teenager
He's 18 and was living at Hope House in Pt Jeff. Not sure of the whole story regarding his parents. He had to leave Hope House because he turned 18. I don't understand it either.

Re: Help for a homeless teenager
I guess you never know the situation. My nephews mom lived in a shelter out east. It was through DSS and she said it was very safe. They lived there for about a year till they got housing.

Re: Help for a homeless teenager
Usually Hope House won't discharge kids with nowhere to go. Can't he contact Father Frank and see if he can give him some places to call?
(I used to work for them.)

I do not have any suggestions for you but please let us know if there is anything we can do to make this child feel safe.

Re: Help for a homeless teenager
I'm sorry to hear & don't know of anything to suggest
Is staying at his girlfriend's house temporarily an option (like on the couch or guest room - since I'm assuming she's a teenager too) until he finds somewhere safe?

Re: Help for a homeless teenager
Unfortunately, he can't stay at the gf's house. My friend was going to make some calls when she got home from work today. Thank you for the good thoughts and links for services. Hopefully it all works out for him.

Re: Help for a homeless teenager
Don't they have any family friends or relatives he can stay with?
A basement or illegal garage apartment even?

Re: Help for a homeless teenager
He's 18, technically not a kid - and a DSS shelter isn't considered "nowhere to go" by any standard at all. People get discharged from the hospital into homeless shelters all the time.

Re: Help for a homeless teenager
does he still go to high school? If so, have him see the guidance counselors there. They will help him.

Re: Help for a homeless teenager
I could be wrong, but I thought Hope House was for drug addicts. I have a friend whose son went there and was asked to leave after he relapsed. If he has a problem such as that, can he get into a halfway house? Might be better than a shelter
