Help! Grossest thing EVER!!!!!!! (minor update in first post)

We had an empty garbage pail next to our garage that was there all winter without its cover on. It was there since the fall when we did one of our fall clean-ups. It's in a far corner of the yard where we didn't pay much mind to it at all. We figured once we started out in the yard in the spring, we would just dump out the water and that would be that.

Today, I walked back to where the pail is, looked inside and to my shock and horror, there is a VERY large animal floating in it - obviously dead. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon The pail is about 3/4 full with water and this dead thing. It's a BIG dead thing. I'm not even sure what it is, all we can see is its back.

WTH do I do about this? I don't want to just overturn the pail and drain out the water because our dog loves to play in the yard and I don't want her to get sick from whatever we dump out of that pail. Also, what do I do with the dead thing? Scoop it out, toss it in a plastic bag and put it out with the trash? Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am SO skeeved right now, it's not even funny.

DH joked that we give the carcass to Lilly as a new chew toy. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon He is just as skeeved as I am and neither one of us wants to deal with it.

I just called my town's sanitation bureau and they said to just dump the water out into the street, bag up the carcass and put it out with the trash.

Since it's so warm and sunny today, I would dump the water out, and just make sure Lilly avoids it today. It should evaporate pretty quick.

As for the carcass, put a garbage bag over the lip of the can, and dump the body into the bag (this avoids touching it at all). Then put it in the trash.

Re: Help! Grossest thing EVER!!!!!!!

sorry to say pitch fork the body or scoop it with a shovel (sick yes very sick but necessary) and double seal it in a bag and put it in the trash. Dump water in the street near a drain if you can if not then dump near soil then for the next few days make sure you spray down the area and keep any animals and children far away for sometime.

Ewwwww! Hope you dealt with it by now but yeah, I would totally advise dumping in the street and not in the ground or Lily may dig to China forever in that spot! Athena is obsessed with this one area in the back that we swear has something dead burried there from previous owners!!!

And the carcass... yep, bag it and dump it. Not sure if Animal Control would take care of something like that. Is it a possom or raccoon or maybe someone's cat?

Re: Help! Grossest thing EVER!!!!!!!

I would call your town and ask them what to do. You don't know if whatever is in there was sick or had rabies or whatever. My parents had a dead raccoon on their property, they called the town who came and got it and were very grateful to my parents for informing them. turns out the raccoon had rabies and the town keep track of stuff like that.

Eww, sorry to hear this! I bet it's a possum! I HATE possums! I'd throw the whole pail away, in a large bag, WITH the animal inside. I wouldn't trust keeping that can and having my pet licking it when it gets warmer and the pail starts to give off an odor. I'd be afraid that there are dangerous bacteria in the pail!
