HELP! Have I lost 21 oz of breast milk???
What do you think ladies.
I had 3 full bottles of breast milk in the fridge. 7 ounces each bottle.
DH didn't close the fridge all the way at about 2:00 this morning and when I came down the temerature of the fridge is reading 50 degrees.
Do you think I can still use the breast milk or have I lost it since it wasn't at 32 degrees for several hours?
I am going to be really pi$$ed if I have lost all that milk.
I need opinions! TIA

I think that if you smell it and it is okay, you could use it in the early part of today. I wouldn't go any further than that though. I'm so sorry, I know you must be and all at the same time.

I agree with this. Definitely smell it first.

Re: HELP! Have I lost 21 oz of breast milk???
BM can stay at room temp 4-6 hours, and 50 degrees is way cooler than room temp, so I think you'll be okay. but I would definitely smell it first to make sure it doesn't smell spoiled.
How long does it take your DC to drink 21 ounces? I'm afraid you might have to toss some of it - only because it takes my DD a full 24 hours to drink that much - and I don't think I would let it go that long.

Thanks... DS will take 21 ounces in 12 hours... 3 bottles for him
I just gave him one of the bottles.. it smelled fine. I might consider giving him one more in 4 hours, but I will smell to make sure. THen I am thinking of dumping the last one. Bummer!

if it smells okay i would use all of it. the resource book i got from my ped says that BM can stay at room temp for up to 12 hours, and i've definitely let milk sit out that long and it has been fine. 50 degrees is way colder than room temp, and the milk itself probably took a while after the fridge was opened to get to 50 degrees. i wouldn't worry about it!

Re: HELP! Have I lost 21 oz of breast milk???
LLL says 8 hours is fine at room temperature - and like Karen said - the frige was cooler than room temperature - I would use it all.
ETA: from www.llli.org
Human milk can be stored
at room temperature (66-72°F, 19-22°C) for up to 10 hours
