Help! Home computer won't boot up!
When I turn my computer at home on, I get the Dell boot-up screen and then it goes completely black with a blinking cursor in the top left hand corner.
Anyone know what the problem could be or how to fix it?

That could be a LOT of things.
Did you recently install any new hardware or software?
Do you hear a series of beeps during the boot up process?

Re: Help! Home computer won't boot up!
This happened to my Dell recently. We took it to my husbands cousin who is a total computer guru and he told me that my mother board was completley gone.
We ended up not fixing it, and just bought a new laptop.

Nope, didn't install anything new and no beeps were heard.. I don't think.
The only fishy thing that has happened recently was that it was resisting going into hibernation mode. Even though it was set to do so, we'd leave it at night and it would still be on in the morning.
If there were beeps, what would that mean?
And yikes! to the idea of a new motherbord!

Do you have an ipod hooked up or anything in the USB ports? try taking those things out and then rebooting.
On one of my PCs, anytime I had my printer and ipod connected together it would act funny.

If there were beeps, you'd be able to lookup what they mean (could signal hardware failure).
A new motherboard would not be the worst thing if it's still under warranty from Dell - is it? If so, give them a call, they may be able to talk you through some simple steps to determine the problem.

Oooo sounds like the motherboard.
DH bought a dell laptop in 2004 - he went through 4 motherboards before his 3-yr extended warranty expired. He'll never buy Dell again.

sounds like motherboard or a bios problem. did you notice if your fans were working before this happened?
If it is the motherboard, the good news is that your drives are problem fine and you still have your information.
