Help me!! Anyone ever have a dry socket before? UPDATE, it was one
I had oral surgery last Thursday for a partially erupted lower right wisdom tooth.
I was sooo careful with it and now all of a sudden I am dying. It HURTS. It looks like a gaping hole in my mouth, it didn't look like that yesterday so I am freaking out...
Of course, out of the 3 oral surgeons in the group I go to, two are on vacation and the other is not working in the office tomorrow...so I either have to wait until Thursday or get a referral. Ugh!
What does a dry socket look like, and what does it feel like????

A dry socket will hurt the entire side of your mouth, very painful! I would call the emergency number right away!

dry socket feels like your heart is pounding in your jaw... a throbbing. Very common in people who smoke after they have oral surgery..... but anyone can get it. the oral surgeons office should definitely have someone on call for them so that you dont have to wait. feel better!

thought I had it but I just got something caught in the stitches. I could not believe that could cause so much pain but i think it was pulling the stitches. I just had to have it flushed out.

Ohh yea it does, and you can taste it to. Tastes pussey kind of. I had a dry socket obviously and I went and saw my surgeon for and he said eventually it would heal itself. What they will do is put a packing in it which will numb the area inside the pocket and the packing is soaked with an antibiotic so to speak to keep it from forming an infection. This will make you feel a whole lot better.
But an oral-b pick so if you feel like the packing is coming out you can push it back into the pocket, promise that doesn't hurt. I thought it would but doesn't. Hope this helps.

Re: Help me!! Anyone ever have a dry socket before?
I just had this last week too!
My tooth felt so much better the day after it was pulled, and then all of a sudden it was getting worse by the day (as bad as it felt before he pulled it - I had the same drilling pain through the whole side of my fact right through to my ear). They say it happens around day 2 or 3 after extraction. I went back to him and he packed it - it felt so much better! The guaze he packed it with tasted gross (it is medicated) but it was better than dealing with the pain. And just so you're not nervous - it didn't hurt when he packed it (but mine was the molar in front of the wisdom tooth).
Definitely call his office and get a referral as soon as you can! Good luck!

Also, if it is not dry socket, I would think it still shouldn't be hurting worse almost a week later. You still definitely need to go!

Re: Help me!! Anyone ever have a dry socket before?
Update: It's a dry socket. But I really had no idea it was that until I saw the oral surgeon again this afternoon. It HURT but I wasn't dying like everyone said...
So he flushed it out (ouch!!!!) and took out my stitches (ouch again) and then he packed it with a small piece of gauze soaked in clove oil. It tastes NASTY!
Oh, and you people lied to me because it hurt like heck to have it packed. I saw stars. It actually hurt about 5473957394 times more than it did before I went to the oral surgeon. But then it finally stopped hurting.
I might have to go back to get it packed again tomorrow and I am dreading it like you wouldn't believe.
Just thought I'd update ya, thanks!

I'm so sorry it hurt you when they cleaned and packed it. Mine felt a little sensitive but it didn't really hurt. After I had mine packed it felt better and he didn't have to repack it again.
Glad you had it taken care of!
