help me decide please
OK- heard back from them. This time they included all of their company information and i did a search on them but can't find anything....My Dh thinks it sounds fishy and I'm still not sure what to think-- he thinks we should suggest that they pay me via paypal---is that a good idea or no? They want to order almost $700 worth of product from me...

Here it is:
Please kindly calculate the total cost of the items,so that you can get the order processed for us we we will email you my credit card account information for the payment of the order and the shipment.
We would have picked the order directly from you with our DH L account but we don't have account with them anymore,so DONT include the shipping fees to the estimate of the order,we will be having our shipping agent that will come and pick the order from you directly,so what we want you to do about the shipment of the order is that our shipper will be coming for the pick up directly at your location,so as soon as we send our credit card account information to you,you
will then have to charge the money for the order,and also for the payment of the shipping,once you are able to get the shipping cost from the shipping agent.
Because the shipper informed us that they are not yet set up to take credit card for payment for now they are upgrading their credit card machine,so what we want you to do is to contact our shipping agent and they would inform you on the cost of picking up the order at your
location and then shipping the order directly to us over here in Malaysia,because we already have some merchandise with them in which after picking our order from you,they will then send them together to us here in Malaysia,so if you are ok with this get back to us ,so as to get the order processed and you will then complete the order for me.Thanks for your
corporation.
SO MY QUESTION is -WHY WOULD I PAY THE SHIPPER??? That's what's making me feel like it's a scam. I also told them I wouldn't deal with them unless they had a valid US billing address...
so confused...
Just got this email:
Dear Sales,
We would like to order some of your products. We are located in Malaysia and also have stores in England. We would like to know if you have the items in stock, so kindly get back to me with the right contact person's email, phone # and confirmation of website so that we can place our order quickly. I would also like to know if you have your own personal shipper or can the order be picked up at your store? Do you accept Visa or Mastercard for payment? Please advise.

I'm going with scam but figured I'd put it out there since I do have a business and it's to my business email address... which isn't highly publicized. Probably a scam though, right?

do you get many international orders?
it *might* be a scam---but who knows? did they say where they got your info from? did they ask for specfic items?
if they want to order and ask that you accept a check or anything like that that they mail to you---then its a scam. (usually they say "i have a check for xxx amount -- can you cash it and send me the difference") or something
ETA: the more i read that -- the more fishy it looks. they didn't provide you with an address of their location? what kind of email address is it--it is from a free domain like hotmail or yahoo?

No, I have never gotten an international order actually. However my neice and nephew's nanny, who is also a good friend of mine, has been telling all of her friends in London and Nepal about my work, and actually sent some of my products back home (she lives in the US now) for her friends and relatives.
Her husband was here last month to visit her and went back already-- he took my cards and postcards with him. He's a shirpa (sp?) and knows a lot of people from around the world that he's become friends with over the years. He's their trek guide whenever they're near him and sometimes he'll fly to other countries to go with them... I don't know if it's worth investigating this--- I'm always so nervous when it comes to this sort of thing...
Maybe I should give my friend a call to see if she knows the name--- though I'm thinking the would've mentioned that they heard about me thru her or her DH.

Some companies do not offer email to their employees so I would not let gmail freak you out. Write back to them as if they were a regualar customer and feel it out.

ITA w/ this. right now my company email is @optonline.net. I know i should really change it but that was the easiest way to do it when I setup my account.

You have to read the source HTML and look to see if there is any white text embedded.
I'd say probably not. It sounds like you are handling it diplomatically and with a good amount of trepidation.

It may not necessarily be a scam. I work closely with our Purchasing department and this may just be a format email that's sent out to any potential new vendors. But it does concern me that they didn't include the name of their company, only their name and email addy.
I think your response is good. Hopefully they'll answer your questions and you'll have a better idea of how to proceed. Let us know what happens!!

Total scam. You shouldn't be paying their shippng agent.
Tell them you will not deal with a third party and you CERTAINLY won't be paying a third party for them. Tell them you will gladly ship the items via your own carrier AFTER their payment for both the items and shipping has cleared.
Have they even made it clear exactly what they want?

yes, they've definitely gone onto my website because they want to order 1 dozen of 7 different designs of my hand-painted flower pots--- they even sent me the item #s.

If they're legitimate, then they will address your concerns about using their shipper and paying for it.
Tell them if they wish to designate a shipper, payment to that shipper will have to clear before the shipment is made.

thanks- DH said that I should be safe if they pay me thru paypal since it's worldwide... but they'll have to pay their own shipper, INCLUDING insurance, b/c I'm not having them tell me the stuff didn't get there or arrived broken or something...
this is what I wrote back to them:

Thanks for getting back to me. From reading your email, it is my understanding that you'd like me to pay for the shipping up front directly to the company. Unfortunately, I do not deal with third party shipping carriers. If you can give me some suggestions as to which parcel services will ship to you, I will gladly ship the items via an authenticated carrier after your payment for both the items and shipping has cleared. Payments are also accepted thru paypal. I can give you two seperate orders if you'd prefer--- one for just the products and then a 2nd invoice for shipping. Your other option is to wait until your shipper has finished upgrading their credit card system, so you can pay them directly. I will await your response.
