Help me decorate my living room! (pics)

I suck so bad at this stuff!

We finally after 5 years, got furniture for the living room.

How would you accessorise this room? I can't seem to find a coffee/cocktail table I like. I also need an end table for in between the two sofas.

I plan to put floor lamps behind each of the chairs next to the fireplace (they are actually recliners). The furniture is like a deep brownish/burgundy.

I plan to buy the below area rug too. Should I also put a small area rug behind the large sofa?

(view from fireplace) - what would you put on the back walls? I'm thinking low bookcases one with a nice table lamp? (there is not alot of light in the room)

what about this wall? (the opening to the right is the dining room)

This is the 8x11 area rug I want to order:

You have an amazing room there and made some great choices with furniture! I would not do another rug behind the sofa. Just the one you picked with a coffee table in the middle of the couches. The large wall would look great with a tapestry. I'd do a mirror and sconces over the fireplace. Believe it or not JcPenney.com has some beautiful coffee tables and accessories that would look gorgeous in that room. Touchofclass.com is great for tapestries. Please post pics when done...it's gonna look beautiful!!!

I love the idea of the tapestry like a pp suggested but think you also need some sort of table or credenza below it to anchor it and bring it together. Or you can do a mirror there which would look really nice. If you do a tapestry I would find one that would complement the colors in that rug which is gorgeous btw. Nice room and furniture!

ITA with everyone else.

Instead of a small area rug, what about a sofa table behind the couch with some lamps or just some decor?

Something like this:

ETA - have you considered moving the 2 chairs to behind where the couches are and create a little reading area there? Maybe put them in the corner with a small table and a lamp. Then you could put the bookcases on each side of the fireplace and really make that wall a focal point.

Something like this:

I think you should go for a 1985 St. Elmo's Fire kind of look:

i like the rug and furniture and love the couch table a pp posted...but...I think a tapestry might be too "heavy" for the room if you go with that rug because the rug has very rich warm colors and the couches are dark too

ETA I think maybe the 2 chairs should either face the fireplace or the seating could make a U shape around fireplace with fireplace as focal point. so in other words the 2 chairs could sit slightly angled into each other opposite the love seat OR just create a whole separate reading area with those two chairs in their own "space"

FTR i totally was going to have the same apt when i moved out of my pafents after seeing this movie.

Michelle how about putting the two couches facing each other so you dont see the backs when you walk in. Then you could put the chairs where you walk in. Some great wall are. Maybe some burnt oranges or deepnred/burgundy.

ITA with the table behind the sofa. I think the space is great and I love the couches!

ETA: the walls in the back look pretty bare, so maybe a painting or some wall decor would be nice. GL!

Re: Help me decorate my living room! (pics)

Thanks for all the suggestions!!!

Leslie - maybe "back in the day" I would have done that! Chat Icon My bedroom was definately bordlerline over the top 80's back then!

We tried with the two couches facing eachother, but it looked "off" and part of the entry way from the dining room gets blocked. This set up seemed to make the most sense in terms of having a conversation area.

Tine - Where did you find that picture? I LOVE that sofa table!

I would go with an oval or round coffee table maybe with glass in the center?
from raymour
External Image

and the rug could work, I would just go with something a little less bold, it will steal your eye to the floor which isn't what you want when you walk in a room

from home decorators
External Image

what color are you doing on the walls? (it looks almost white from here) since you have such dark furniture, I would at the very least paint it a warmer tone like BM geranium

External Image

on the empty wall I would do a large piece of art or frames or even one of these metal decor pieces

Re: Help me decorate my living room! (pics)

Here are my thoughts...

Clear off the mantle. Put up a nice mirror and maybe a couple of candles and a framed picture on either side like the pic below (or shelving). Or you could put sconces on either side above the chairs or do a picture above the mantle and long mirrors on either side behind the chairs.

For the window I would do a tan or camel color panel with a dark rod. These nailhead panels from west elm would look great I think.

External Image

I can't exactly tell what the wall color is... tan or a yellow? Are you changing it?

I would also put a table behind the sofa like an above poster said and get a square coffee table.

For the back wall you could do some shelving on the left (smaller side) and then a low bookcase with a lamp and picture hung above like you said for the right. For the other wall where the opening to the dining room is you could do an iron piece or a collage of photos.

ETA: If you haven't ordered the rug yet, have you thought of something lighter and brighter?
