Help me figure out why my newborn is spitting up so much after a feeding.
We are feeding him 4 ounces of similac with iron formula. He's been taking this since day 1 in the hospital, he's two weeks old.
His past two feedings today ended up in him spitting up or should I say throwing up about an ounce or more of it. I can't tell how much but he soaked the upper part of his shirt and receiving blanket. I've also seen him spit up on him that I think may be coming out of his nose!
I burp him every 1 1/2 ounce and I have him lay on my chest for a bit before I put him down for a nap. What else should I do and what could be causing it? The only thing that's different is we are no longer using the ready to use 2 ounce similar w/ iron bottles. We purchased the larger bottles of the same formula and are only pouring in the desired amount. We shake it very well too.

I was told spit up looks like a lot, but really it isnt. Are you burping baby enough or using mylicon? Maybe DC has acid reflux.

This only happened today and my mom who was over today fed him the last two feedings. I didn't see this prior to today.
I hope she burped him enough. I told her too but who knows if she listened to me. I went out today to get some baby stuff.
I really hope he doesn't have acid reflux :(

Is it possible that 4 oz. is too much for a two-week old? DD is 6 weeks and eats 4 oz. of BM (pumped).
Also, are these the RTF bottles? When DD came home from the hospital, I tried using these and she spit up the whole bottle it seemed. Have you tried Born Free or Dr. Brown's?

The pediatrician recommended the amount and at yesterday's appt they even said he can go up to 5 if he's hungry. He's almost 11 pounds.
Burping him every 1 1/2 ounch also helps determining if he wants more or not and he always finishes 4 ounces. Sometimes he gets mad when I burp him at 1 1/2 ounce.
I also pour the formula into the 4 ounce Avent bottles I have. I never tried Dr. Browns bottles.

I started us Dr. browns b/c of spit up and gas, and things seem to be getting better as long as the burps come out.

Oh! I didn't realize he was 11 lb., okay. If it persists, I would try Dr. Browns or the Born Free. I use the BF and they are easier to clean than Dr. Browns. HTH.

Call your ped. He may suggest switching to Gentlease or Enfamil AR.

Did you recently go from ready to feed to powder or are you still doing ready to feed?
Also, I do not think it is necessary to shake it if it is the ready to feed formula.

Re: Help me figure out why my newborn is spitting up so much after a feeding.
I think 4 oz sounds like a lot for a 2 weeks old. My dd ate less than 2 oz when we were in the hospital and now at 3 weeks old she eats 3 oz (sometimes 2.5 oz) per feeding.
I just read that your ped rec the 4 oz. Maybe try a little less to see what happens.

Maybe try to feed him a little less at each feeding, but you will have to feed him more often. 4 oz seems like a lot to give him all at once.
