Help me stop obsessing about...
my upcoming bloodwork for my new job. And, the TB test.
Having worked in NYC and been coughed and sneezed on for the past 3 years, I know that I NEED to be tested for TB.
But, I'm terrified. ABSOLUTELY TERRIFED...not only of the TB test, but also of the bloodwork.
AND, now I'm hearing that it's possible I may have to do a TB test once a YEAR at this job.

I used to hate needles but I have gotten over it. I learned along the way a little trick. Don't look, and take a deep breath. It will be okay, just try and take deep breathes and relax.

jsut keep talking while they do it, and you won't even realize it. it hurts less than a pinch, imo

I have to get a TB test every year too. It is rather minor. Good luck!

Re: Help me stop obsessing about...
I'm pretty needle-phobic, so I understand the obsession!
The advice people have already posted is great. Also, I ask the person doing the blood test (the nurse, technician, whoever it is) to make small talk with me while s/he does it. This helps to keep me distracted from thinking about the needle.
You'll be fine!

You will be fine. Just relax, deep breath, close your eyes and think of the beach, palm trees, vacation (usually works for me). It will be over before you know it! I promise. I FREAKED out about an epidural in the hospital 2 weeks ago and let me tell you, it really wasn't that bad! Like I said, deep breath, close your eyes, positive thoughts!

Re: Help me stop obsessing about...
I used to have a REAL problem with needles and bloodwork - I would work myself into such a frenzy that I would pass out EVERYTIME. What's worse, it got so bad that I would start shaking while I was passed out because my blood sugar and blood pressure would drop so low, it almost looked like I was having a seizure. One time I really must have freaked out my doc because he used smelling salts to wake me up, and told me from that point forth I was to go to the hospital to get blood drawn - his office wouldn't do it for me At the time I was in HS so my parents signed me up for this biofeedback class where they teach you relaxation techniques. It worked fairly well, and with time, I slowly grew out of it - especially after having a miscarriage and then getting pregnant again - you get so poked and prodded that you begin to not care anymore.
I still employ a few techniques to relax when I'm getting blood drawn - first, drink something sweet, like orange juice, to give you a boost of sugar so you don't get woozy. Second, take DEEP BREATHS. Really, it works. Third, tell the technician that you really have a problem with needles - ask to have your blood drawn in a private room, lying down (they are ALWAYS very understanding). Fourth, ask the technician to talk to you while taking the blood. Turn your head away and talk through the whole thing - it helps to distract
