Help me with a new carseat.
DS is going to be 9 months old at the end of the month. He is probably close to 20lbs now. I have been using the Chicco Cortina travel system but I feel like my arm is going to fall off when I carry him in that seat. I want to get one now that I can just leave in the car. What are your recommendations? I am clueless with this stuff.

Re: Help me with a new carseat.
DS is 7 months, we switched ours at the end of June. Kudos to you for making it that long.
I bought the Eddie Bauer one, it goes until I need a booster. I can't think of the model name/number. I got it at BJ's. I have seen another mom on here with it too, just can't remember. I noticed it in her picture. Its good. It does the trick. matches my car nice (not that its a reason to get it) Good reviews too.

Re: Help me with a new carseat.
I have 2 graco comfort sports and 1 evenflo triumph.
I love both types of seats. The evenflo triumph is SO SO SO easy to adjust the straps (no rethreading) and is a bit roomier and comfy-er than the gracos.

Re: Help me with a new carseat.
Before you go out and buy a seat. What car do you have? The Eddie Baur is not the best choice for many cars. It may go into a booster but it still only goes to 40 pounds as a foward facing seat. As well as there were some negative reports about its use as a booster seat.
There are a variety of better choices out there. Even the Evenflo has problems with certain cars as the contours of the automobile sometimes interfer with the loosening of the harness straps.

Re: Help me with a new carseat.
Right now I have a Ford Focus that I plan to drive until it dies. I just don't want another car payment but that's another thread!
This thread also made me think-----I should probably get something to bring to keep at my IL's since they watch him during the week. I was browsing through the "baby bargains" book and it said that most of the convertible car seats are okay, regardless of amount you spend because they all have to pass the same safety ratings and such. Anyone care to comment on the major differences? We will probably go for something "middle of the road" in terms of cost.

We have three seats, convertible seats really shouldn't be taken out that much if at all possible.
We have the Eddie Bauer in my car, it is fine, I don't love it, but like I said, it is fine.
We have a Graco Comfortsport in my DH's car and I LOVE it. It costs between $69-$99 depending on the pattern. It is highly rated, it doesn't go up that high in weight, but my DS is almost 2.5 and is only 29lbs, so that doesn't really concern me that much.
In my parents car, we have a Cosco Scenra. It was approximately $60 (I think) I think theirs is only forward facing, but I've been told differently, but we like that seat as well.
If I was in your shoes, I'd get your ILs a Comfortsport for their car

The Eddie Bauer goes to 100 pounds as a booster NOT a car seat. The main concern for seat use is with regard to a 5-point harness use, not booster.

Re: Help me with a new carseat.
i've got a britax marathon in both cars, i love how easy it is to use, and DS always seems comfortable in it. for a carseat, i wanted to spend the extra $$ for one with higher ratings.

In terms of safety, you are correct. All seats must pass teh same standards for seafety. It is features, ease of use, ease of installation that a copnsumer needs to choose from.
The best seat is the one you can afford, that fits your car and that you can use correctly each time. Not all seat fits that model.
One thing that is important in picking a seat is to try to find one that goes beyond 40 pounds forward facing. Many convertable seats that later become boosters do not use the 5-point harness beyond 40 pounds.
Children should use 5-points as long as possible, so when choosing a seat, try to get one that goes beyond 40 pounds. There are several reasons for this, but the basic rule of thumb is that children under 4 years old should not be in a booster.
Parents tend to graduate children into boosters too soon thinking "they are big enough." There are some nice choices outh there that do go beyonf the 40 pounds, and more coming on the market.
Not every seat fits every car nicely. Example is the Triumph is a great seat, but in some cars, rear facing the release for the harness adjustment gets locked up in the automobile cushion making it a bad choice for that car.
The insurance institute did not rate a number of seats that become boosters highly. You may want to review their findings.
The Forf Focus is not a large car, there are several choices that may work best for your vehicle, and ones that fit your pocketbook. If you want to fm me we can discuss the choices in more detail.

Re: Help me with a new carseat.
We have Britax Boulevards. They go up to 65lbs forward facing, but don't convert to booster seats. My feelings were that DS was in the car seat until his 6th b-day. He'll be in the booster for several more years. After 6 years, I'd rather get him a new booster seat so I don't have to worry about the plastic aging. Booster seats are pretty cheap, so I don't mind buying new ones.
