Help my friend!!
I have a really good friend who worked in a school district as an asst. to the superintendant. She went on maternity leave, and when she was ready to go back to work, the school district cut her position.
She's now been having a heck of a time finding a job. She is very experienced so I think she is looking for a certain salary, which I can understand and relate to.
She also said that she has been meeting with a lot of recruiters and she's feeling that she's not being sent on interviews because she is very adamant that she wants a 9-5 position, and employers don't want to hear that (they seem to be looking for people who will be like the chic in A Devil Wears Prada).
Any advice? Any ideas of where to send her? She lives right here on Long Island.
She really is a great person, goes above and beyond and has amazing people skills. I think anyone would be glad to have her!!!

I could be mistaken but i thought that with FMLA they HAD to give her a position?

it doesn't matter, they are required by law to offer her another job if hers was eliminated. sounds shady to me.
on a side note, I would never tell an employer or recruiter that you only want to work 9-5. that is a red flag not to hire her IMO.

if she was an assistant, does that mean it was a clerical position? did she take the civil service test? she should put her name back in the running and see what comes up...what about other districts around her?

I think it's good to be honest. She has a young son at home. They are sending her to places that want someone to work like 12 hour (or more!) shifts every day, but aren't advertising that. If I was looking for someone to work those hours, and they couldn't, I'd need to know that, and the potential staff need to know what the hours are. I don't think it's a bad thing necessarily........especially if technically the hours are 9-5. It's called setting your boundaries.
It's also one thing if it's every once in awhile vs. every freakin' day.
Also, some of these recruiters are like 22, fresh out of college, and really IMO don't understand/can't relate to the needs of working mothers (not that she tells them she has a child). I don't have children myself so I am interested in general of hearing if any mothers out there feel like they are maybe "discriminated" out there in the working world, for lack of a better term.......when trying to return to work.

Yes- as long as she wasnt out more than 12 weeks...
How long was she home for?

It varies by state. In NYS, she has to have worked for the company for a certain number of hours (about 1 year) and they have to be bigger than a certain size. I didn't qualify for FMLA b/c I'd been at my company 11 months when I had dd.
But if she met all the requirements and the company was large enough to have to participate in FMLA and she didn't take longer than 12 weeks, then yes, they have to give her a job, not necessarily her job back.

I think her best shot may be to take a civil service test and get into the state or county system. While the pay is less, I think she may have a hard time finding the pay she is looking for in a corporate environment. High-level people generally want secretaries and assistants that are available to them when they need them, which sounds like it's more than she wants right now. I think she's either going to have to compromise on money or hours.
