HELP! Need ALL opinions...UPDATE-please read!!

k, well, as some of u know, i am back to work on monday.....for 2 weeks, i have to work the day shift, and then i am up in the air as to what to work when i actually get back to my precinct...so, put urselves in my shoes, what do u think?

if i continue to work days, the commute stinks at that time into the city (hours are 705-340pm)...our childcare would be MIL 2pm-5pm sometimes 2 and sometimes 3 days a week (it would rotate)....at least i would be home with hannah every nite and get to put her to bed and stuff and i would get decent sleep...but the day people get a lot of details, meaning the hourse are crazy sometimes and u get overtime and blah blah .... and we dont have to pay MIL (we are wanting to get a house in the next year or 2, so saving money would be good)...

if i went to midnite, the commute is better, but am i guaranteed to come right home at 830 in the morning at get sleep until greg leaves for work at 2pm? then i have to wake up and play with hannah, give her a nap (which she will grow out of eventually), try to sleep a little more when she does, wake up again when she does, play and hang out, put her to bed, then leave for work....im just worried about sleep here....and our childcare is our babysitter, and she can crap out at any time bc she isnt family and doesnt REALLY care...(you know how it is- i was a babysitter myself once)....although we arent asking a lot of her, come here and sit for 2 hours while greg gets home....another down side to this is- im not going to be home in the middle of the nite- when im probly the one DD would prefer if woken in the middle of the nite if shes sick or something...

ETA!!!!!!

we were just thinking that if i did the midnights, and i DO get pregnant soon, ill more than likely be able to get a lot of sleep...ill probly have to do some paperwork in the beginning or something, but then get to go to sleep by 2am or so....where as if i work days, ill probly be doing a LOT of administrative work the entire shift.....

is this reason enough to do midnights???

That's a tough one. I'd probably do days. My bro is a cop too and he likes to work as much OT as possible so that he and my SIL can get a house soon. But they don't have kids.

Re: HELP! Need ALL opinions...

I would do days! DH is a cop and although gets details once in awhile it's not every weekend. I think it will be better for you sleep wise as well.

Humm, if I was in your shoes I work days because I am not sure you would get any sleep if you worked nights or afternoons. Do you *have* to accept the over time? Could you say to your supervisor/coworkers for the next couple of years until DC is in pre-k I am not going to be able to take much ot. Would that be fround upon? Good luck.

I would opt for days. It sounds like the ideal time even with the occassional OT. Also um...I think days are safer in Harlem but I don't really know. I'd rather you be safe more than anything else.

I think I would go for days. You can be home at a decent time, spend quality time with DD and still get a good nights sleep. Don't other people love to do OT - couldn't you just pass it off on someone else? I am clueless - so I really don't know how it works! Chat Icon

I would do days. Yes, the commute stinks but it's a better schedule because it conforms to what most people work and once Hannah starts doing parties, playdates, etc, you are going to want to be a part of it.

i think i would take the day shift. my father used to be a cop and when he worked nights we never saw him. when he was home during the day he was always sleeping.

Re: HELP! Need ALL opinions...

I would also take days. For safety reasons like Barb mentioned, and for the reason that you'll be on the same "clock" as the rest of the world.
you dont wanna be delirious when your little girl is ready to play (although most of us are even if we dont work--myself first on that list Chat Icon)

good luck, im sure its a tough decision, summer Chat Icon Chat Icon

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Do you HAVE to take OT, yes you do!

I am going to go against the grain here and say to do nights. My DH is FDNY and it is similar, when he was working days he would get mandated all the time and end up working that he didn't want at least two times a week. But now he is on nights (slightly different shift, 6pm-2am) and it is so much easier to get home. And for you, it would be better to come in and go home.

Do they make you go to desk duty when you get pregnant? Could you do that on anight shift?

ETA: I am not working right now, but when I do go back to work Chris will have Christopher until I get home in the afternoons and it works out nicely. You have your MIL, which is great. It is really hard to find decently priced childcare when you don't need it 9-5 M-F.

yeah, my LT is great- he says that "summer, dont worry about being stuck on a shift if it isnt working out for you...if midnights is hard, youll switch, thats all"....so, i could start out on days, and switch with the pregnancy (keeping fingers crossed-still waiting for AF and finished that progesterone on sunday!!!)....greg thinks i should start on midnite- hey, u never know, and i might be okay.....i dont know....

i just dont want hannah to suffer bc mommy is tired, u know? i know on days, id be all gung-ho coming home seeing my baby...im just afraid i will be so lethargic during my work weeks....and what about my days off...switching from sleeping at day to sleeping at nite....ugh.....this is crazy!!

u guys are probly thinking- way to wait to think about this! but trust me, we have been back and forth between what shifts to work and everything for 4 or 5 months!!!!

im crazy, i dont know what to do!!!

It seems like you would have more Hannah time if you worked nights but would you get good sleep at home during the day when Hannah is up?

well, we figured it out- the hannah time would be about the same either way- on days- id get home around 5 and get hannah time til about 930, and with midnights, id get hannah time at that time, plus maybe an hour in the afternoon (from 2-3, about when she goes to bed)....

see how crazy this is to decide???!!!

the QUALITY of hannah time might be better if i was on days, bc i wouldnt be tired, where as midnites, i just MIGHT be too tired...............

Re: HELP! Need ALL opinions...UPDATE-please read!!

I think days would be better. Coming from somebody who works midnights, it is hard to go on broken sleep. Also you will come home and want to spend time with Hannah even if your DH is home to take care of her. I only have to do it 1-2 days a week, so it's not so terrible, but if I worked 5 nights a week I know I could not handle it.

Well I can tell you that my best friend is a cop & she works midnights. Her fiancee is a cop & he works day tours. He does get hit with more OT, but her life is completely crazy. She gets close to no sleep. They almost never see eachother ( because of sched & commute.) After doing it for two years she wants to switch to days because it is a more "normal" life. JMHO, stick with days if you can. Anyway, good luck going back to work. Chat Icon

Re: HELP! Need ALL opinions...UPDATE-please read!!

I'm not a cop, but I recently had to work the night shift and I can tell you it is about the same amount of time spent with DC BUT I was definitely WAY more tired and groggy working nights. There were some benefits but I must prefer functioning with the rest of the world working daysChat Icon
