Help please! Our landlord is selling the house we rent in ...
We just found out yesterday that he's going to put the house on the market. We were looking to move into a bigger place soon anyway, so its not awful news for us ... except I guess it accelerates our time table 
He's an absentee landlord, but his brother lives locally.
They do not currently have a key, and we do not want to give them one if we can avoid it at all.
What are our rights?
What are our responsibilities?
How often do you think we need to be available for showing the apartment?

You need to talk to him and tell him when the best time would be for you to show the place.
Most likely, he will ask you for a key. I find it hard to believe that there isn't another key to your apartment somewhere though.
If you work it out with him I'm sure you can come to a compromise and understanding.

There is a spare key (around here somewhere!). And it wouldn't be hard to get a copy made ... I guess I'm just saying that I don't really trust having anyone here when we're not home considering all our stuff is here.
We changed the locks when we moved in 3 years ago, and he never asked for a key and we never volunteered it.
Do we HAVE to give them a key?

since he is the owner of the home, i would assume yes, but i don't know the legal answer to this.
our landlord is selling the home we rent as well.
we are lucky that the REA is trying to accommdate us as much as possible.
i am home saturdays, sundays and wednesdays so i told the REA that with enough notice (a few days minimum) i would be happy to be home those days for a few hours.
so far so good (well almost ). they are even doing an open house here on saturday.
i would speak with the landlord's REA and see how they want to go about things. they will also probably need to take pics of the apartment.
