HELP! Somebody Flipped the Switch on my 9 Month old!
DS has always been a really easy going baby. Always happy. Always content. Babbler. Smily. You get the picture.
Well, in the last few days he's been SO whiny. Like a completely different baby. Anytime he doesn't get his way he cries/whines. It is so grating, especially when you're not used to it. I've been finding myself giving in to him because the whining is annoying (sorry, just being honest). But I really need advice on how to deal with it. Obviously I know I should not give in to him. But what do I do in terms of how I respond?. Should I just ignore him? Should I sternly tell him to stop whining (as if he would even understand what I'm saying)? I don't want to be a pushover but I also don't want to me a mean mommy.
Just want to make sure I'm using the appropriate level of discipline for a 9 month old that he can respond to. Any advice would be truly appreciated

Personally, I don't think you need discipline at all...I think he is probably teething
My DS gets really whiny, etc. when he is teething.

I'm not sure if it is teething....he's not gnawing on anything or giving me any signs. The whining mostly happens when he wants something and we won't give it to him (cordless phones, remote controls, hair brushes). Seems like I can offer him any one of his toys and he still cries and whines.
The word "discipline" sounds harsh. I'm not looking to make him sit in the corner or anything. Really what I'm asking is should I ignore him when he does it, give him exactly what he wants (def. don't think I should do that), or use a more stern voice to tell him no. Something along those lines.

Happened with Logan too - if Matthew is the same as him it's just a phase.
Wait it out and see.
I don't think you can discipline just yet.

Re: HELP! Somebody Flipped the Switch on my 9 Month old!
Caden will be 8 months on the 20th. He too has gotten a bit whiney the past week or so. I attribute it to a heightened awareness of objects and object permanence. I can no longer leave the room without him complaining. If he notices he's alone he'll whine...he'll whine or complain if Im folding clothes and not paying complete attention to him.
In general I ignore it. On occasion I will very firmly say "ENOUGH". He does realize by the tone of my voice that I mean business. It's the same voice I use for "No". He usually will stop...

He may be teething. I wouldn't do anything really, I would hug him or hold him, he may be hurting.

no problem, we're also having this problem as well. Happens at home. But worst of all at daycare. From the second I put him down to play he follows my every move while whining and crying. I always stay at least 20 minutes because he makes me feel so guilty plus I like to play with him. He's been there for 6 months already and we've never had an issue until about a month ago. The teacher's always have to hold him and distract him so I can sneak off. And even then some mornings he looks like he'll twist his neck off trying to see where I am.

Re: HELP! Somebody Flipped the Switch on my 9 Month old!
DD has started doing this lately - but I think in part it is teething - but she is definitely throwing those temper tantrums when she doesn't get her way - if she wants to get off my lap or crawl one direction and I remove her b/c she is getting into trouble or going into someone's bag she starts crying and gets mad.

Jack gets pretty whiny sometimes that I want to jump off a bridge - I've noticed that if I take him out of the room we are in - and bring him somewhere else in the house - with new things to occupy him - that works - SOMETIMES!

We have been going through this for the last week or so. I feel like it's separation anxiety he is experiencing...maybe the same for your son. He is now at the point where he will crawl after me as I am leaving but the teachers grab him and hold him. We wave good-bye and I leave. They make it a lot easier for both of us.
Hopefully this phase passes quick for you and me both!
