Help! The new woman I work with....
reads everything aloud. It doesnt matter if it's something on her computer, a magazine, newspaper.... She mumbles it to herself. Not only that but she talks to herself. This wouldnt be as much of a problem if we didnt sit about three feet apart all day long.
I dont even know what to say to make it stop! We sit on a trading desk so it's noisey to begin with. But the constant mumbling is driving me crazy. A friend suggested I just keep saying "What was that?" every time she does it but I cant bring myself to do it.
How can i get her to stop? I am about to lose my mind here.

Other than repeatedly saying "Excuse me, what did you say?" I think the only way to get your point across is to be direct.
eta. Whenever DH can't understand something I've said (I'm a low talker), he says loudly "Your what hurts?" Drives me insane...

It doesn't have to be confrontational. You could just ask her to either lower her voice or if she could stop because it's disruptive.

Re: Help! The new woman I work with....
you definitely should just start saying "are you talking to me?" "what did you say?"
chances are she doesn't realize she's doing it, and this would be a *seemingly* innocent way to curb it

I would just pretend like you really thought she was talking to you & that you could not hear. Maybe she does not realize that you can hear her.

.
I honestly think this is the best way to go about it. There is nothing rude or confrontational about it. All you are doing is confirming if she is talking to you. It may take a few times, but maybe she will re-think repeating stuff so you dont keep asking her.
All you gotta keep saying is "I'm sorry what did you say". She'll say Oh I was just talking to myself. Then next time Repeat......then repeat.........then repeat.
