Help! Verbal apraxia-who diagnoses?
Just curious...I don't even clearly understand what it is but I was told by my DS neurologist that his issue with articulation was not neurologically related. She seemed to think it was a fine motor issue and wrote a scrip for OT. Did an eval through the district and his fine motor was fine in general. He already gets speech 3x a week, started with PROMPT in June. He was getting regular speech therapy 2x a week for a year prior to that. He is so hard to understand, it makes me so sad. He tries really hard but he cannot make certain sounds. And if he's trying to say something long, forget it. I had an internal panic attack last weekend that he will not be able to overcome this by next Sept for Kindergarten. I spoke with his SLP yesterday and she is also concerned and is putting in a request for speech 4x a week. She used the term apraxia and has explained a few times that he has motor planning issues. Does a SLP who has worked with a child for a few months know better than a neurologist who met him 1x? I am already upset bc I feel like last year was a waste and am wondering if I should be trying to get him into a special school to get more than 30 minutes a day of help. He has no other issues. His receptive language was always very high. His expressive was very low when he first got eval. 1 1/2 yrs ago but is now average. His artic. is @ 2%. I don't know what to do...

I am actually taking ds to a neurologist next week. His speech therapist thinks he has apraxia and recommended that I take him. She said that a neuro has to diagnose him. I hope I'm doing the right thing.

My son has apraxia. A certified speech therapist does the diagnosis. A neurologist can assist in the diagnosis, but since nothing shows up on a scan there is nothing for the neurologist to see.

RMA9728 was right in saying that the SLP is the professional who should be making the formal diagnosis and that a neurologist can provide important info to the SLP making the dx. That said you can go to SLP who specialize in verbal apraxia and/or are PROMPT trained or certified through your insurance as well. I do know that if apraxia is suspected that children do best with shorter (no longer than 30 min) sessions but increased frequency 4-5 times per week. So if an increase is being recommended I would defintely take it. HTH

Sorry to crash, but I use Donna Lederman (she has a website: www.donnalederman.com) and has two offices in East Williston and one in Commack. She also has other SLP's that work for her, Kristen Kalos is particularly awesome! HTH.
If you need any additional help, just let me know.

I've heard great things about Donna's practice...I know a couple of families that have gone there and have been really happy :)

I've mentioned this before, but Kristin also works at the preschool where I'm a psychologist, and she does absolutely fabulous work with the children there. I wish I had 1/2 of her bubbly energy!
