What does this mean?
What mulitplication fact could you use to find a number that can be divided equally by 8 and 9?

Good thing I am only a reading teacher!

Re: Help with a 3rd grade math problem!!
I THINK (but I'm not positive), what they're looking for is: 8 x 9 = 72. With that "multiplication fact" at hand, you don't have to do any other problem solving to conclude that 72 can be divided by both 8 and 9.

Re: Help with a 3rd grade math problem!!
Why do they have to ask a long confusion question to have kids get an answer?
Why can't they just say, what is 8 times 9?
I'm really good at math problems and I'm baffled at what they are asking for. A word, or a number, or a fact???

It's designed to make you think a little more. Pure number math is relatively simple, but that rarely happens in real life. By starting them early to think about the math, I think it makes them much better math students. I'll do things like that with DS, and I would hope he would get homework like this next year.

Re: Help with a 3rd grade math problem!!
I'm pretty sure the answer is "lowest common multiple"

I am all for the higher order thinking questions, but they should make sense. If most of us don't understand the question how would a 7 year old?

At first glance I thought 72 also but that is neither a "fact" or is it "divided equally" so.....I have no clue sorry!

Re: Help with a 3rd grade math problem!!
It's a poorly worded question unless you have the list of "multiplication facts" they went over in class. I imagine it included "lowest common multiple" along with "lowest common divider" and other similar concepts.
I'm all for teaching concepts rather than memorization, but a word bank or definition sheet would definitely be helpful for parents trying to help! Knowing how to do a problem, rather than just what the answer is, is so important. I like that they teach this way now, rather than rote memorization.

It *is* a fact. To find a guaranteed number that is divisible by two numbers, you simply multiply them. I learned that early on in school. "Divided equally" means no fractions. You can divide 72 by 5, but you get 14.4, so it doesn't divide "equally".
I love math and word problems...
