Help with a paper?
Could anybody help me with a paper that I am writing for a class? I'm not currently teaching, so it is hard to write this paper. I just need to discuss parental involvement in the classroom at the high school level and ways that you involved parents and the outcomes of the involvement. Also, what would you like to do in the future to help with parents? I am taking classes and usually I just BS my way through, but it's hard when I have to cite specific examples. Thanks everybody! I appreciate it

Re: Help with a paper?
I teach at the hs level. Parental involvement is pretty slim. I teach students who are classified as special education students. I find that I either have a few very involved almost to the point of annoying parents and the rest of the parents I could go the entire year without speaking to them.
As for what I do, I make a lot of parent phone calls to inform the parents of the students progress. However, many times I do not get a call back from parents.
Let me know if I can help you any more.

Re: Help with a paper?
I agree with all of the above. I find that parents at the hs level either do not reach out at all, or they are annoyingly in your face, but the vast majority fall into the first catergory. Phone calls and letters home are the best way to reach hs parents. Usually when you send a letter, you get a response...from the student!

Re: Help with a paper?
sure thing... i have done a lot of parent outreach, including parent phone calls, progress reports, hot/cold feedback letters, etc. i am also the dean of my school so i do a lot of parent meetings, including interventions or mediations between teachers and students with the parents involved. our school does wider outreach to parents, as well. for example, the parent coordinator has monthly teas on topics that engage parents (from dealing with teens to correcting your credit score).
