Help with Breast milk storage
I have heard of the rule of 4 - but I also have two books - everything seems to say something different about how you can store your milk.
I have only recently started to pump for bottles when I want to go out with DD and don't want to BF at the store etc.
So my question - can anyone help with how to store?
If I put milk in the fridge how many days is it good for? 4? 1?
If it is good for say 4 days but by day 2 I realize I won't be using it in the 4 days can I then freeze it? or do I need to freeze it immediately if I am going to?
What is the best way to defreeze my milk if I want to use it later in the day?

Re: Help with Breast milk storage
i never kept milk in the fridge longer than 3 days....and if i put it in the friday, the next day i would put it in the freezer....and i wouldnt use anything from the freezer that was more than 3/4 months, although they say it is good for 6 months, even up to a year in those deep freeze freezers.....
as far as "thawing" after the freezer- u can put it in the fridge all day, but i never felt comfortable with that (just me), so i always just put that plastic bag in lukewarm water and it would thaw and be ready in like 10 minutes.....

Re: Help with Breast milk storage
I heard the rule of the 4 (which I use), the rule of the 3 and the rule of the 6.
Per a ped I asked, you can freeze after you store in fridge but it's better to freeze right away if you want to freeze it.
To thaw the milk, put in fridge for 24 hours or if you need immediately run it under hot water.

The only time I go with the rule of 6 for refrigerated storage is if I store it immediately in Baby Gs personal fridge that has ONLY his milk in it.
For thawing or for warming I use a bowl of warm water. I am not a fan of boiling it or nuking it, as you are more likely to kill nutrients that way.

Re: Help with Breast milk storage
thank you I just didn't want to give her something that could make her sick - I will just throw out the milk I don't use right away and haven't frozen to be safe rather than sorry!
