Help with living room layout... *pics included*
The house that we're in contract with has a difficult living room layout. The house was built in 1921 so I'm thinking they weren't concerned with where we modern day folks would be able to put our flat screen tvs. ;) The original thought was to hang the flat screen above the fireplace, but my DH fears damage to the tv. But I see and hear of people hanging their tvs above their fireplaces all the time and it seems to work out fine. So I'm not sure how much of an issue this really would be. The second thought was to hang it on the bare wall. But the problem with that is our couch would essentially be sitting right in front of the fire place (we use the fireplace pretty frequently in our current home so we would want it to be accessible for use in this home too). We have a large sofa and an oversized chair. The sofa, in this scenario, would run along the big window (which I already don't like that idea because we'd be blocking that nice window seat) and the oversized chair would be blocking off part of the fireplace. The third, and least likely to be chosen option, is to put the tv on a stand of some sort opposite the blank wall... But I really, really don't want to block that beautiful stained glass window with a big, ugly tv. So there's pretty much no way that's happening. My ideal situation is to hang the tv above the fireplace. Have the long sofa against the bare wall, and the oversized chair in front of the window. Does anyone else see any other layout options/ideas that we may not be thinking of? Can anyone offer any insight to the pros/cons of hanging a tv above the fireplace? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What is located at the other end of the room (what would be to your back if you were standing at the bottom of the picture facing the big window)?

Another big window facing the front of the house. And just past the fireplace is a doorway leading into another room off the side of the house. So that side of the room can't be considered at all, which is why I didn't include it in the photo.

You definitely have room for the tv on top of the fireplace. i would place your couch in front of the fireplace with a nice sofa table behind it. maybe your oversized chair by the window like a reading area. Its a beautiful room :)

eta: I have my tv on top of my fireplace and its fine plus the distance between my tv and the fire opening is smaller than yours.

That's good to know. DH is very concerned about the soot and the heat damaging the tv. We've read all kinds of different opinions online on the matter, which doesn't really help since nothing seems very definitive.

We have ours above the fireplace but it's a gas fireplace. I honestly think it will be fine.
My brother has his above his non-gas fireplace too and has never had a problem!

No, it wouldn't. We already measured for that option.

Beautiful room! I would mount the tv over the fireplace and then play around with various furniture configuration. Angling the sofa (left side of fireplace) and the chair opposite the sofa (am i making sense?) with a area rug as an anchor is another option.
