Help with SIL issue-Updated

My SIL is 13 and she is an 8th grader at a Catholic school. This week, she was beat up by a girl at school and the girl broke her nose!! Mary Kate (my SIL) got blamed because the other girl said that she was teasing one of the boys and this girl got upset and decided to beat up Mary Kate.

The Sister said that nothing could be done and the girl wasn't even punished. I don't know, where I come from when someone gets beat up and they know who did it, that person gets in trouble!!

What should we do next? I was talking to Mary Kate today and she is so upset, it is hard enough to be 13, but to have a broken nose and bruises all over her face!

UPDATE: Thank you all for your responses!! We called the police and filed a report yesterday and took a ton of pictures of her face.

I actually work for a PI/med mal attorney and I told my boss what was up and we are going to call the school tomorrow.

My poor SMIL feels like she always gets taken advantage of because she is a single parent (FIL passed away 8 years ago) and this school happens to be very patriarcal. Thank god Mary is going to high school next year!

I would go up to the school and demand to speak with the principal. That is unacceptable. I don't care who your SIL was making fun of no one has the right to put their hands on her!!

Yes, the Mother (I hope I am saying that right, I can never remember if she is a MOther or a Sister, the principal) said that the other girl said that Mary Kate "asked for it".

I am outraged!

I think this lady needs a broken nose for how she is handling this situation.

I am outraged as well.
They should take it up with the school first - they should not tolerate violence of any kind. If they don't take it seriously, then they should bring charges against that girl.

My father used to be a Regent and I know that my parents will be outraged when I tell them as well (they are at a wedding or else I would have told them already). If this was a public school behaving like this, I know my dad would be able to ask around and get the right people involved. But does this apply to Catholic schools?

Re: Help with SIL issue

The lack of response on the part of the school is outrageous! At this point, since the school will do nothing, I would have the girl arrested for assault, because that is EXACTLY what it was. I don't care what your SIL was saying to someone else. That other girl had no right to put her hands on her. It doesn't matter whether it happened on the grounds of a Catholic school or in the street. As for the school, I would be telling them they will have a lawsuit on their hands for not supervising the children properly. I would find out if this girl has a history of this behaviour and I would, also, be slapping a lawsuit on her parents. It is because nothing is done in situations such as these that this kind of behaviour is allowed to continue. I would, also, be pulling her out of that school and demanding a full refund of the tuition I already paid. Freakin' school administrators need to grow a backbone and stand up for the victims.

Wow, that seriously goes against all I thought Catholic School was all about. I went to Catholic School for 12 years and if your hand even TOUCHED another student....YOU WERE OUT. To break a nose, I'm sitting here shaking my head. I would take this up even with the Diociesan as well. This is not right, worse that it happened in a Cathoilic School.

That's ridiculous! I teach in a public school in NYC and while a kid in my school would be suspended for something like that, my principal and AP always encourage the parents to press charges against a child who injures another. What that girl did sounds like assault to me.

I would take pictures of your SIL to document the damage that this other girl did.

I completly agree! This happened to my cousin- she is 14. And they pressed charges. I would definetly take action in my own hands- call the police and also find out if there was anyone who witnessed her getting hit.
I am so sorry for her!Chat Icon

Re: Help with SIL issue

I would bring it up with the school administrators and honestly, if you dont feel it has been addressed properly, call a lawyer and perhaps the press. Even if you dont call the press, if you say you will, magically things happen.

Re: Help with SIL issue

Take pictures and call the police. It is outragoous that the school has done nothing. Once the police are involved the school will jump. You can also threaten a law suit claiming that the school is an unsafe environment for your SIL. Now every kd that picks on your SIL will say she asked for it and just beat her? I don't thik so. That's BS!!!!!

Re: Help with SIL issue

my first instinct - the other girl's parents are powerful/connected in some way. Otherwise, I totally can't understand the school's response. That is just a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Definitely press charges!!

I have to agree. I went to Catholic school for most of my 12 years. If you laid a finger, no matter who was to blame, you were IMMEDIATELY expelled. My HS had a no tolerance for fighting... didn't matter who started it, both or all (if more than two) paries were expelled. They were serious about this.

We only had two fights the entire time I was there. One a girl fight, sophomore year... all immediately expelled, no parent meeting, nothing as all parent are informed of the policy in writing upon admission.
Two boys fought the last two weeks of senior year, they were expelled and despite four years in Catholic school had to enroll in the public school to graduate.

1. take PICTURES of her injuries and document EVERYTHING; when, where, who, etc etc...

2. call the police and file a report! your SIL was assaulted - and that girl deserves to be punished.

3. call your lawyer - the school needs to be held responsible as well - and their inability and unwillingness to address the situation properly, would leave me no choice BUT to sue!! Chat Icon

good luck, and keep us posted! Chat Icon

This is rediculous. We can't even feel safe sending kids to a CATHOLIC school.

No. We live on Staten Island. I told my SMIL to do that too. I am not familiar with how Catholic schools work, but I am sure she is.

What is unreal is that my other SIL (who is 15 and graduated this school 2 years ago) got suspended for using fowl language (b!tch was what she said) but this girl is walking into school tomorrow morningChat Icon
