Um...I'm no mathematician, but yes, it does work. 
99
9+9= 18
99-18= 81
Then look at 81, memorize the symbol, and it comes up. Works for me every time!

It's NOT the symbol...it changes every time. The trick is that the symbol mathes the answer every time.

It's just simple math. When you add the two digits and subtract it from the original, you'll come up with a multiple of 9. If you look at the symbol chart, you'll see that every multiple of 9 is the same symbol. The symbols change, but they just "guess" whatever symbol they use for the multiples of 9 location.
