Re: herniated belly button
my grandmother had this and had surgery to repair it a few years ago. i think she doesn't have a belly button at all now because the sewed it up! i'm sure it was different though ibecause she got it later on in life.

3 people in DH's family have this as well. They didn't have until later in life

Is it something that HAS to be repaired? I have heard of it but never seen it.

Re: herniated belly button
My son had one when he was born. Most of the time it is something that goes away on it's own. My son's did not go away and he had to have surgery to have it repaired when he was almost 5. He is 7 now, and he is fine, they made his belly button look like an innie. You can only tell if you're looking for it that it is not a perfect innie. I wouldn't worry, like I said most go away on their own, and surgery is only used as a last resort.

Re: herniated belly button
My DD has this and the doc said that it should go away on its own.
Question though...if it doesn't go away, why does it need to be repaired? Does it cause some kind of problem or pain?

you know, that's a good question that I wil lask my Ped next month....doc told me that we really won't know if it'll be an outie until she's about 5, it can correct itself up until that point. She did mention surgery, but now I wonder if is necessary , I'll let you know Rachael.

I would ask your ped, I never knew until my doctor told us on her 2 month visit.
