Hi. Any nurses or sane people to talk me off the ledge?
I have to go for a colonoscopy at 845 tomorrow morning. I am done drinking the stuff, but I am SUPER afraid of the IV needle tomorrow. Whenever I get bloodwork done, I get the cold/clammy/naseous/going to faint feeling. I never look at the needle! Can anyone give me some advice on how to avoid this? Thanks!

No "real" advice other than take some nice deep breaths and close your eyes. I try to go to my "happy place" because I am terrified of needles.
Good luck though

ITA.. close your eyes & go to your happy place. Can you bring an ipod with you. Maybe some music can keep you focused on something else?

thanks! I am looking past the IV to me going home to be able to eat a big ole stack of take-out IHOP blueberry pancakes! And in 14 hours I will be able to do so! I just wish I wasn't so afraid of the IV

Re: Hi. Any nurses or sane people to talk me off the ledge?
I've been through a few colonoscopies.
Frankly you got through the hard part, drinking that crap! Yuck!
They will put you on a gurney bed (it's nice and comfy) ask you a ton of health questions and wheel you in. Your doctor and a few other medical professionals will be there including your anesthesiologist.
Tell the anesthesiologist that you are not good with needles. Tell him/her about your past experiences. These doctors are usually very good with patients with some anxiety. And who doesn't have anxiety with a colonoscopy? Right??
There will be so much activity going on while they prep you that you probably won't even know they put the needle in there. Just don't look at it and have someone distract you with conversation about something happy.
If they put the IV in before they wheel you in, do the same.
The best part is the 20 minute sleep you will have. You will remember nothing including the needle.
Good luck tomorrow. I hope everything is ok.

Thanks Susan, that made me feel better! The best part is that at least I get it over with early in the morning! My best friend had one done in January and she had her procedure scheduled for noon, and it got pushed back til 1:30 thanks again for your advice (and everyone else's too) and I can't wait to be done!

I have had many a colonoscopy...
They put you out-- you feel nothing. The worst part about tomorrow is getting the IV for the anethsia (sp?).
The WORST part of a colonoscopy for me is drinking the stuff, then pooping every 5 mins all night.

Oh, I'm sorry you are feeling so anxious. Colonoscopies are never fun. I had one about two years ago. Looking back, the worst part was definitely drinking that horrible drink and going to the bathroom like crazy the night before. Just don't look down at the IV needle. close your eyes and think of something else like those pancakes you are going to have. I never look either. Then, before you know it, you'll wake up and it'll be all over. Good luck!

Re: Hi. Any nurses or sane people to talk me off the ledge?
Thanks everyone for your replies and support. I am hoping that if I tell the doctors how anxious I'm feeling, they will be patient with me and help me through it! The best part for me is that now, in 12 hours, it will be all finished!

Re: Hi. Any nurses or sane people to talk me off the ledge?
I have also had a colonoscopy before and was nervous about it too, but seriously, to me, the prep was way worse than the actual procedure. The anesthesiologist was great and almost immediately after starting the anesthesia, I was out. And when they woke me up, I actually felt great and totally relaxed. So try not to get yourself worked up. It really goes fast!

I am An RN, who also had Many Colonoscopies. Like everyone has said the Worst Part is Over the Prep. As far as the IV Needle, Just turn your head & Take a Deep Breath. You won't feel a thing. And then before you know it, it'll All be Over.
Don't even think about getting the IV, just try to Relax when you go in & Don't Worry.
Good Luck & PLS. Keep Us UpDated!!!

This is what I did when I had to have 4 teeth pulled at once. I did not go under so I knew that I'd be seeing the surgeons work on me & I'd see the blood.

I love having a colonoscopy! My doctor is wonderful...once the IV is in he puts on the Nitrus mask and it is lights out. The best 30 minute sleep ever. You will wake up rejuvenated and not remembering a thing. I hate needles too but that nitrus is fundabar!

Close your eyes and say the alphabet backwards. You'll be concentrating so hard on saying the alphabet that you won't really notice the needle prick.
