Hi! I wanted to introduce myself and ask a question!
Hi everyone! I am back on this board as DH and I will start TTC #2 this summer! We have a 17 month old son. I do have a question that maybe someone can answer. I am currently on BC and I am not going to stop until we actually start TTC (I get really, really bad cramps not being on the pill). Anyway, I know that folic acid is good for ovulation and I actually took that when we were TTC #1 but I started taking it the month that I stopped the pill. Should I start taking folic acid even though I am on the pill? I guess it cant hurt but I was wondering if its really beneficial while still on BC. TIA! Lots of to all!!!

Re: Hi! I wanted to introduce myself and ask a question!
Hello! From what I understand, taking folic acid is actually recommended when trying to conceive as it helps to prevent some birth defects. I found this online at WomensHealth.gov :
"Get 400 micrograms (or 0.4 mg) of folic acid daily. Eat foods fortified with folic acid, take a multivitamin, or take a folic acid pill to get your daily dose. Taking folic acid in a pill is the best way to be sure you're getting enough. Including 0.4 mgof folic acid (or folate) in your diet before you get pregnant and in the first three months of pregnancy can help prevent some birth defects. If you don't get enough folic acid, your baby's spine may not form right. This is called spina bifida (spy-nuh bif-uh-duh). Also, your baby needs folic acid to develop a healthy brain. Many doctors will prescribe a vitamin with folic acid. But you also can buy vitamins or folic acid pills at drug and grocery stores. Some foods rich in folate include: leafy green vegetables, kidney beans, orange juice and other citrus fruits, peanuts, broccoli, asparagus, peas, lentils, and whole-grain products. Folic acid is also added to some foods like enriched breads, pastas, rice and cereals. Get more details on folic acid."
I take a prenatal vitamin every day to get both my f.a. and other nutrients in and based on what I've been reading so far, would recommend that you do too Best of luck!
ETA: I'm sorry, I just realized that I didn't answer your actual question! Duh I'm not a dr., but I don't think that it would be bad at all. If you're planning on ttc soon, it's probably better to start taking it sooner rather than later.

Re: Hi! I wanted to introduce myself and ask a question!
i don't know anything about folic acid helping with ovulatiuon but i know it is an excellent supplement to take, since it kind of builds up in your system and some people believe that it can lead to a healthy pregnancy to start with (this is coming from a friend of mine who studied this in school, not a dr, so definitely talk to your OBGYN if you have any doubts).
that being said, i would definitely start taking a prenatal vitamin with folic acid in it now (they are available OTC). good luck and lots of to you!!

ITA! If you don't want to make an appt., perhaps a quick call to your OBGYN or even your pharmacist would give you a better idea of what to do...

Re: Hi! I wanted to introduce myself and ask a question!
I don't know anything about whether folic acid is good for ovulation, but it reduces the chances of the baby having neural tube defects. My doctor recommended that I start taking a multivitamin with folic acid at least 3 months before TTC. I started taking a multivitamin 9 months before we TTC (I was on BCP that entire time).
Good luck!

Re: Hi! I wanted to introduce myself and ask a question!
I have been taking folic acid for 2 years now. My dr. suggested that I start because it keeps the "bad cells" away from the cervix. When I told him I wanted to TTC he doubled my dosage instead of having me on pre-natals.
