Hi ladies...I'm finally joining you
Milani was born on August 4th...3 days early. She is precious!
Of course...I have a dilemma..
This question is re: Breastfeeding.
I had decided I was going to try breastfeeding. While in the hospital I attempted it, and it hurt so bad that I had them give her the bottle at night and during the day I would attempt to BF. That didn't work out too well because she wasn't latching on to both breasts and the one she did was so sore I was in tears every time I had to feed her so I stopped. Once we got home, I purchased a pump which was not cheap and figured I could pump the milk out and give it to her in the bottle. Well...it is taking me forever to fill up a bottle. Meanwhile I'm giving Milani formula. I've also been breastfeeding her as much as I can, and giving her the milk I pump out as well. It's very hard when she only latches on to one breast. I just can't keep up with the demand (Night feedings etc) so I give her formula as well.
While I really want to BF, I feel like I may be confusing her, even though she takes both with no problem My questions are:
1- What can I do?? 2 - Once you start pumping, does the milk come out faster?
TIA!!

welcome - and congrats. Your daughter was born on my birthday!! :)
I pumped - nursed - and supplemented with formula at night so maybe I can help you a little.
How often are you pumping and for how long?

Hi!!! Thanks!! AWWW how cute!! Happy Belated Birthday
Ok..right now..I am TRYING to pump every 2 hours. I do 15 minutes on each breast and sometimes go back and do them again until I can't take it anymore.

Congrats to you and welcome to the board.
I would contact a Lactation Consultant to help you with Milani's latch. My LC was a LIFESAVER and I did NOT have sore nipples once she showed me (and Maddie) what a proper latch is. She was also covered by insurance.
At only 4 days PP, your milk may not be in fully. By pumping, BFing, and supplementing with formula, you might mess up your supply temporarily and wind up badly engorged.

Re: Hi ladies...I'm finally joining you
I pumped for a long time, I don't remember having any supply problems, so my advice would be to pump as often as you can and keep on going with the Breastfeeding! Why not feed her on the one breast and then pump on the other one? Also, do supplement with formula, keep pumping and your supply will keep growing!
And, did your son come into the delivery room with you?
Congratulations!

He came in but he did not stay. He came in while I was having a contraction..and when he left I heard he was hysterical.. . He was worried about me.

Congratulations on your baby girl!
First advise, would be to talk to a LC.
I would suggest you pump every 2 to 3 hours. You need to be dedicated at it and really follow the 2-3 hours schedule. If you are irregular, you may have problems with your milk supply.
Drink lots of water too.

Congrats on your DD!!!
I agree with the above advice and that I would try to contact a LC as if you are in pain she might very well not be latching on properly.
I would try to pump every two hours if you can do it - to try to increase your supply - are you drinking a lot of fluids- try increasing your fluid intake as well - that might help with your supply.

Re: Hi ladies...I'm finally joining you
Definitly call a LC but you should not be filling a bottle at this point BFing is supply and demand. You should only be producing 1-3 ounces due to your DS age. My DS is 3 months and when I pump I only get about 4 ounces from each breast right now.
Increasing fluids is a huge part of getting a good supply. Good luck. I think a LC will help out greatly. I had problems with latching with my first son. I had a LC come to my house and help and within the hour he was latching on perfectly and the pain was gone.

CONGRATS! You definately could do both if you need to. I did it with my DD for the first six months since I didn't produce much. But its still so early- I would consult a lacation consulatant-
