Hi twin mommies..I have a question

Do multiple births always require a c-section?

Not that I am a twin mommy - but I know a couple of people that have had twins and not all of them had them by c-section

Re: Hi twin mommies..I have a question

No.

Some OB's want to schedule a c-section at the 7 week appt. which is completely unnecessary. A doc with considerable experience with multiples will not automaticaly do that.

As long as both are vertex (even when twin B isn't vertex, some docs will turn twin B after twin A has been delivered vaginally) and barring no other complications a vaginal delivery is entirely possible and even encouraged by experienced docs.

This was my first question to my high-risk OB. Had he wanted to schedule one at my 7 week appt. I was prepared to walk right out the door.

ETA: TRiplets are an entirely different story. They require c-sections and are taken much earlier due to what the size of three of them can physically due to a woman.

2 of my SILs have twins. 1 delivered vaginally, the other had a c-section (b/c her other 2 kids were c/s), so it's not automatic.

Re: Hi twin mommies..I have a question

I had to have a c/section. Both babies were breech and they were backwards! I never had really nice sonogram pictures!

Re: Hi twin mommies..I have a question

No they do not - but some circumstances require it - such as mine - where one was laying across and one was upright -

however - I have noticed that alot of doctors opt for it instead of the natural way.
Which I am not sure why - but I definetly noticed that.

Re: Hi twin mommies..I have a question

Mine did and I knew at my 10 week appointment that was how they were going to come into this world.

My boys shared the same placenta and there is a risk that while one is coming out they can rip the cord of the other and cause death. So most doctors are totally against doing anything but a c-section.

I was fine with my doctor's decision once he explained it to me. However I think most twins can be delivered vaginally if you want them to be.

Re: Hi twin mommies..I have a question

Both my babies were vertex but one was suffering from IUGR and the dr. said a vaginal delivery would stress him out more.

Re: Hi twin mommies..I have a question

I was able to choose a c-section at any time, but they thought I could have a vaginal birth. I was induced for 3 days in hopes that I would be able to do this, but since one of my boys was IUGR, we could not wait any longer, so I ended up with the c-section.

Re: Hi twin mommies..I have a question

Totally depends on your situation, one of my twins was breech and the other was vertex.

I had a c-section.

Re: Hi twin mommies..I have a question

Nope....I had my girls completely natural...no epi no nothing...(I wanted the epi but I went from 6 cm to 10cm in 10 minutes there was no time)

Fortunately they were both head down from week 30ish and I basically had the best case scenario for delivering twins naturally.

Actually my Dr told me yesterday that as long as Baby B is not much bigger than Baby A they can pull baby B out feet first. My Dr would like me to try for vag birth.
