Hiding an in-wall air conditioner
My husband hates our in-wall air conditioner with a passion.
I admit, it's brown and ugly... But even if we upgrade, it's still going in this wall:
Rusty wants to hide it somehow. He's talking about getting a piece like on the end of this 3-piece unit:
It's not tall enough though, and I think it will look silly. The AC will still be visible around the back. And we'll have to remove whatever is on the top shelf in the summer so the air can blow.
Do you know any way to "hide" your in-wall ac units?

I have to say, it's barely noticeable in that room. I think attempting to hide it will draw more attention to it than just leaving it be.

I agree. I had to look around the room in your pic to find it! lol

I agree, it's not that bad.
Does that door at the top of the pic work? I could see myself falling through it, I'm a klutz that way.

What might help "hide" it, is to have a similar size and color print/painting/artwork on the opposite side of the wall. Then it would look like it was part of the design.

Re: Hiding an in-wall air conditioner
I have an in wall ac and now it's light colored but before it was brown. I hated it. I put a cover on it now and I don't really notice it now.

Re: Hiding an in-wall air conditioner
I don't think it's that big of a deal either, and the couch I ordered yesterday actually matches it.
I'm trying to compromise but I don't want to have to come up with some wild solution to something I don't think is much a problem.
Putting something the same size on the other end is a great idea though, thanks!

I'm beginning to see that this will be "the" question about our house. So far, everyone who has seen it has asked about that door.
That's the attic. But I'm planning on telling my nieces and nephews that that's where we put the bad children who don't behave. Which is why there's no way down.

I was going to suggest artwork on hinges screwed to the wall and have some artworkon the wall to balance the cover up artwork.

Re: Hiding an in-wall air conditioner
I know someone that hangs a really pretty tapestry over her a/c most of the year. Its offset on her wall too but next to a tall piece of furniture so its looks like it belongs. your room is really pretty!

Re: Hiding an in-wall air conditioner
We used to have one and I was trying to think of the same thing.
I had thought of building a wooden box that would sit over the unit (when in months that it would not be used) and could be painted the wall's color.
But we took the a/c out and never did what I was thinking.

Re: Hiding an in-wall air conditioner
My parents used to have an in-wall air conditioner before they went with CAC. They used to have shutters over it like a window would. It always looked good and was unobtrusive.

Re: Hiding an in-wall air conditioner
We actually painted one of our in-wall A/C's. You just need to use paint for plastic. I believe it comes in a spray can. It was a ugly dirty color.....we believe at one point it was white, but they all smoked in the house so we painted it white and it looks much better now. Just a thought! GL! And I don't think it looks that bad in your room. And the other ideas about offsetting it with paintings or pics is a great idea.
