High Risk OB/GYN v. RE

I have a question but first let me give a little background.

1st pregnancy - Ectopic
2nd pregnancy - MC

All this time I have been seeing a regular OB/GYN. During my last MC I brought up the idea of seeing a High Risk OB/GYN but my regular OB/GYN did not feel it was necessary. The only thing that he suggested that we do once the MC process was over was an HSG. I was alittle frustrrated with his approach and decided I needed better and more agressive care.

So, DH and I went to see a RE. He laid out a plan for us if we want to do IUI or IVF. There are several blood test we have to get done, HSG, and SA.

So, I have two questions.

1) Did we jump the gun by going to a RE. Based on what i see on a lot of post it appears that most people have tried other things and have had several test done before they actually went to see a RE.

2) Is there any other test that our RE should be doing? I want to have a baby but I also want to know if there is anything wrong.

Please don't quote me, i plan to remove this.

TIA. The process is a bit overwhelming and any advice you can give will be helpful. Chat Icon

It hink that you may have jumped the gun, but who cares, because the testing will get done and you will have peace of mind and the ability to make a more informed decision towards what if any treatment you might need while not wasting valuable time KWIM?

I would insist on them doing the recurrent M/C or thrombophilia panel.

I had 2 Losses and a chemical PG yet none of the OB's or RE's did this panel and it turns out I have a few factors that contribute to recurrent m/c as well as inability to implant( making treatments useless on occasion)...so thats my only suggestion....many dr's wait till you have 3-4 Losses till you get those tests done.

HTH!

Good LUCK!

I don't think you jumped the gun at all.
Most OB's are not very skilled at detecting or looking for unusual things.
If you go to an RE, they will be very agressive with treatment.
An RE will mostly likely do a full blood workup and look for any kind of genetic issues.

I wanted to add if you do get PG...CHANGE TO A HIGH RISK OB.

My New OB is high risk and the care I have gotten vs. a prev pg has been a huge difference. They did SOO much to make sure I would not M/C again.

I totally agree with the other posters. When I first started my IF journey, I felt shameful for going to one. But, that was the best thing I had ever done! And I totally advocate going to one especially if you had no success for a while.

I also wanted to add that in the beginning of my IF journey, I was so naive. I thought that a RE also delivers babies. So like Dm24angel mentioned, switch to a high risk ob once you get pg.

i think the high risk would be a good idea. My dr knows i have a uterine septum and tells me that i should wait until 3-4 m/c's before doing anything about it...my response "ummm if we know what the problem is, and i'll most likely continue to have problems..why not fix it now" then he told me the whole "well you're still young, it may implant differently...blah blah blah" so when we start ttc again, i will be switching immediatly. I think it will give you a huge relief and in the end, less stress and aggravation...plus they'll know exactly what tests to run and when you do get pg, can monitor you more closely.

Re: High Risk OB/GYN v. RE

I don't think you jumped the gun at all. After my first loss (ectopic) my reg. ob/gyn wanted me to wait 6-9 months of trying before I went to an RE (at 39 yo). I waited 3 months. I'm glad I did, we found out I have luteal phase defect and DH has some issues which have now been resolved with acupuncture.

Trust yourself and your instincts.
