holding crayon/pencil the right way...do you force it or it just clicks?
he always starts off right, with me forming his fingers around crayon...I turn my back and the is holding it incorrectly(the way I actually hold it)
then within minutes he's in a fist hold with it.
he traces so much better before the fist hold...is it just a matter of building the muscles?
and is holding it wrong hereditary? I always drove my mother crazy with the way I hold it, totally see him doing the same.
ETA: I don't mean force in a mean way more like do you keep correcting it or just let them be?

She def just got it. She was drawing since around 11 months (well scribbling). If he holds it right credit yourself if its wrong blame it on your MIL...HA! (hereditary : ))

thanks!
he draws everyday, I let him do what he wants until we get to his "homework book" then I tell him its big boy time.
he says okay, once I turn, back to fist.

I was told to sharpen the pencils down or break them so they are too little to use a fist and must be used with fingers.

How old is he now?
If he's younger than 3, I wouldn't force it. After that, I would try to correct him whenever possible.
My DH was never corrected and his handwriting is absolutely horrible. I can also tell you that I've had MANY 5th graders with improper grip on their pencils.
So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that you should definitely start him on it early, but not so early that it takes all of the fun out of it...KWIM?

Crayola has those crayons that are triangular shaped. They really helped DD when she colors, she sort of had to grasp it correctly.

Re: holding crayon/pencil the right way...do you force it or it just clicks?
i have beautiful handwriting and can draw pretty decent but i hold pens/pencils in a fist........when i got older and people noticed it would make me wonder why nobody corrected me as a kid....but i really don't see the big deal since i write nice and don't have any problems - i think its kind of cute that he holds it like you
in my wedding video they zoom in on us signing our marriage certificate and watching myself write did look terribly awkward though i can't describe exactly how i hold pens/pencils but it looks uncomfortable and strange....oh well!
maybe get the ones that are made to put your fingers in the right spot
