Re: Holiday celebration in the classroom

My daughter is in k and they are having a holiday party. It's going to be a neutral winter party. The class spent a few days learning about xmas and about Chanukah. I sent in chocolate gelt and soufganiyot (jelly donuts) yesterday when they learned about Chanukah. Today, they are making latkes.
Dreidels and gelt are not religious symbols- it's a gambling game. A menorah would be a religious symbol (chanukiah is a Chanukah menorah w 8 candles plus the shamash which makes 9). What kid doesn't like chocolate coins and a spinning top?

Jesus (no pun intended) all this PC stuff is RIDICULOUS! Let them bring it in, who cares and in fact send in Santa hats for the kids celebrate Xmas. I dont understand why we have to pretend that differences dont exist and just celebrate them all and learn about them. Im sorry, this kind of stuff really gets under my skin.

It's not meant to be "PC"... its public school. Separation of church and state. Religion doesn't have a place in public education unless EVERY holiday is being represented (Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa). Plus, you need to take Jehovahs Witnesses into account... they don't celebrate any holidays.

Don't shoot the messenger... the above were the EXACT words my kids principal spoke.

But technically there isnt full separation of C and S because public schools have days off for religious holidays

There has to be some happy medium and everyone has to be more flexible and open minded

Holiday celebration in the classroom

i would refer her to the teacher. this seems like it would have to do with school policies on relgion, etc.
AND those also seems like items that she could put in a goodie bag for each kid, rather than as her contribution to the party. so i would maybe suggest that...

Re: Holiday celebration in the classroom

My son is in public school. In their room, they have a Christmas tree, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa decorations. I'd rather him learn and celebrate all holidays, then pretend we're all celebrating snowmen and snow right now. Kids are excited about what their families are doing at home right now, why can't they share it with their classmates? Children should be able to see their culture as important and worth being proud about, not ignore it. It's not being PC, it's not teaching children about culture.
Obviously it is up to your school and your teacher, but I would love if my son learned more about other cultures, that seems like a great activity for a class party to me.

Thats great that they allow for all the decorations! I wish my school did this.

Our "celebration" is supposed to be winter themed, snowmen basically. We decorated cupcakes and made hot chocolate bags.

Re: Holiday celebration in the classroom

In my daughters first grade class they have had many holiday celebrations and learned about the ways holidays are celebrated by different people all over the world. They had a day where they ate latkes and applesauce and played the dreidel game.
We had a day where they made gingerbread houses.
My daughter in 3rd grade had a writing assignment where she was an elf.

I would probably just let the mom bring in her things assuming food items are allowed. Teachers have to have signed permissions slips in our school.
