Holiday gift collection for the troops

So for our office holiday party, we've decided to take a collection for gifts to send over to the armed forces (the big boss' son is in the military in Afghanistan.....so we'll coordinate delivery overseas).

Anyone have insight as to what sort of stuff is appropriate and necessary to send? I know our staff will look to me for suggestions, and would like to try to make our "donation" meaningful.

My DH's list a few Xmas ago for him and his troop was:
cookies and chocolate
shampoo, soap, new razors
under armor, undershirts, boxers
phone cards that can be used internationally
boxed crackers, snacks
DVD's
Itunes gift cards
ipods, kindles etc.
gift cards for online purchases (especially amazon)
books, magazines
