Holiday gift for the principal?
I am new in my school and just found out that it ALL OF THE TEACHERS individually buy the principal a gift!!! That seems so awkward!
I had no idea what to get and I asked another staff member who said it depends on what you personally want to spend.
As a new teacher, I am afraid of looking bad and having it reflect on my performance reviews. How terrible is that, that I have to feel that way?!?! So I spent $50!
Anyone else have this in their school?

Re: Holiday gift for the principal?
I think this is pretty common ... I usually give a really nice card and a gift card or chocolates ( I happen to really like my principal and my APs but even so, I think its a very standard thing to do). Curious to hear other opinions ...

Re: Holiday gift for the principal?
I have in the past at my old job. however, this job I don't because i buy for all the secretaries...and my A.P. of my academy as well as the dean. I just wrote the principal a card wishing her a great holiday. It gets kind of crazy with all these gifts. Where does it end you know?

I used to but no longer. Apparently, nobody really does in my school.

I don't think anyone in my building does this.

Re: Holiday gift for the principal?
I never have..I don't feel close to my administration at all and have also been told that you typically don't give gifts to "superiors," so to speak..it just feels awkward to me...

Re: Holiday gift for the principal?
interesting... NO one in my school does this and we loved our prior principal and love the new one. it's just not common practice. what is she going to do with 50+ gifts, not to mention what she might get from families?
We give to the custodians and the secretaries. ETA: and that is just pooled cash we put in a card or a gift card.

Re: Holiday gift for the principal?
Thanks everyone, I just feel like the whole situation is dumb.
I heard the principal takes things very personally and that most people in the school give him a gift.
Well, my response to that is ... I take things personally too- and he's NOT giving ME spit!!
I don't like the idea that u need to s uck up to him. The principle of it (no pun intended) doesn't sit well with me!
