Holidays without children

Does anyone not really celebrate the holidays much bc they don't have kids?

Since we are unable to have children, and as of now, there are no children in my immediate family, we really don't do much

I used to try to decorate and make it festive, invite family over, cook a huge meal- just trying to make some sort of family tradition...but just don't feel like doing it anymore

Now I'll just make a nice dinner for DH and myself...but just don't feel like going through the whole big rigmarole

Just doesn't feel the same...

To us it's really just an excuse to go off the diet and eat a big meal with dessert. Chat Icon And I'm OK with that. Chat Icon

For us, neither of us are religious so regardless of the fact that we don't have kids we're not big on holidays. My mom loves to cook and entertain even though she's not that religious either, but she's very social. So usually we just go there to eat (usually just to make her happyChat Icon ).

If it's a national holiday (July 4, Labor Day) we'll do the bbq or beach thing with friends that have kids.

Re: Holidays without children

I decorate for the holidays because I do it for me. Yeah, it's a lot of work, but I enjoy it.

My sister has children, so we usually celebrate holidays with them. DH has no siblings. DH and I are their only aunt and uncle, and they are our only niece and nephew.

DH suprised me yesterday by slipping the kids a $20 each - my nephew because he is going to the Met game with BIL today, and my niece to get ice cream with mom since they are staying home.
He told me that his uncles used to do the same thing for him when he was younger, since he didn't have a dad.

For a man that does not want children of his own, he treats others so well.

Re: Holidays without children

We spend the holidays with my family, and most of my siblings all have kids.

For example this past Easter I did the decorating of eggs with my niece & nephew and spent the day with them at my parent's house. DH joined me after work, we had dinner there and then went home and relaxed.

While we are CF - I take advantage of not having to host any holidays or make big meals myself. Chat Icon

Us too. It's a good excuse to eat and drink too much and spend time with our families. The holidays are for adults too Chat Icon

ETA: As far as Christmas goes we decorate and make cookies and get a tree and all that for ourselves. We are like little kids when it comes to that stuff. I hope you are able to find the little kid in yourselves and enjoy the holidays againChat Icon

Re: Holidays without children

my brother and sister both have kids and holidays are spent together, in my family. but i enjoy the festivity of decorating and whatnot for the holidays for myself, not necessarily for the kids. and i definitely like having everyone together - whether it's with my family or DH's - and on his side, there are no children. i love it all the same.

Re: Holidays without children

Yes. Easter was surprisingly very difficult this year. DH and I have had it for the past few years, but couldn't this year because one of my parents can't travel. So, DH, MIL and I went to my parents'. It was a very nice day -- my mother gets into all holidays -- but it was just off. I saw a little girl all dressed up in an Easter dress at hat at the bakery and it took my breath away because I will never be the mom holding her hand.

Sorry, I'm feeling bad for myself and making myself cry. Not the best way to start the day.

Anyway, down the road, I can see DH and I skipping holidays all together. Even when we're invited to go to large gatherings at other relatives' homes, I just don't have it in me to go.

Re: Holidays without children

For Christmas, we put up a tree and do so minimal decorating. For the actualy holiday, we travel to my ILs and then to my parents. We are usually not at home for the entire holiday week so I feel like it is a waste to decorate when we are not really there to enjoy it.

For all other holidays, we do not do too much to celebrate. I usually take out the festive hand towels and that's about it. For Easter, I go on vacation with my parents and he goes to his parents' house. If we have children, this set up will obviously change.
