Home Depot is closer. I dont think he has a preference - he usually goes into both to price a specific large purchase and goes with whoever is cheaper.
I hate them both equally

DH loves the Lowes on 110 in Farmingdale. Ok, so he's obsessed with the Lowes in Farmingdale. He actually went there almost every day of his vacation last week.
He'll go to the Home Depot for a quick item though since its closer.
ETA: I've found the people in Lowes are more knowledgeable and helpful, whereas in Home Depot you're more likely to get someone to say "This isn't my department" and then walk away.

Re: Home Depot
I like HD better because I pass by one on the way home from work, and there are two others closer to home than Lowes. Plus, I think part of it is brand loyalty. HD has been in the area for a long time, and Lowes is the "new kid". That's definitely not my primary reason, but I think it's a factor.

Re: Home Depot
We prefer Lowes, we love the one on 110 in Farmingdale. I think there stuff is nicer than Home Depot but that's JMO. We go to Home Deopt also to compare sometimes. I've also found Lowes to be more "woman friendly".
