Home heating oil
Has anyone recently looking into prices for oil? Last year we locked in for 2.04 and I'm just curious what I can expect for this year. Also, is there a website where you can find cheap prices? I know last year there was the JP & Elvis Oil Cartel, but I can't find the site .
TIA, Kelly

Re: Home heating oil
I buy c.o.d. and just filled up my tank for $1.99 per gallon. The place I deal with is Main Street Fuel in Holbrook.

Re: Home heating oil
I started calling COD places last week and the cheapest was Nordica at $1.89. I imagine it's gone down in a week though.

Re: Home heating oil
We do C.O.D. as well.
Everyone kept telling us to lock into an oil contract. Those people are now paying about 80 cents more a gallon. That's hundreds of dollars difference every time the tank is filled. Glad we didn't.

Re: Home heating oil
Do COD places come at a certain time each month? Do you have to call them when you are low? Do you have a service contract for parts/service with them? I am curious...also I feel like I would never be home for the delivery-do you set up appointments?

You have to keep an eye on your own oil supply and call them. We call when it gets to be a 1/4 of a tank because the more you buy the cheaper it is.
No service contract that is why the price is so low. It's no strings attached. We have a brand new system and got it serviced and tuned up last week (6 months old). Everyone has recommended to us to not lock into an oil contract because our system is so new... it's doesn't pay. If something goes wrong you pay for all parts. If you have an older system you may just want to go with a service contract.
Some companies will take credit cards over the phone if you are not going to be home. Often they charge a few cents more per gallon for charging it but it is still well worth it. Our oil company tells us what day of the week they will be in our area for delivery.

You can also do COD and get a separate contract for service-most COD places offer this.

Do you know how much you spent in total last year as I have a contract and do budget and wondered if I spent more. I pay 12 months @ $143 so I spent $1,700 for the year.

Re: Home heating oil
Basically, take your cost per gallon that you paid last year, subtract $2.00 (which was the average last year for C.O.D. and it's a bit less right now) to get the difference per gallon in price.
Take the difference in price per gallon and multiply it by the number of gallons you used. That will tell you your potnetial savings. Our separate service tune up and cleaning ran us $150. We would have spent about $800-1000 more on home heating oil had we had an all inclusive contract last year. We have a large 4 bedroom colonial.
Again, it depends upon your system. If it's new it's worth the risk but if it's on the older side you may want to get an all inclusive contract knowing someone will always be there.

Thanks. Do you know how much in total you paid? I live in a 3 bedroom ranch so it is probably smaller than your home too.

I live in a 3 bedroom ranch as well, and I spent approximately $800.00 on oil last year.

Thanks...we'll keep that in mind in our next house...this unit is old, working at 75% efficiency as of last oct.

It honestly, doesn't matter. You can't really compare house to house because of the difference in square footage, age of windows and doors and burner efficiency. We sold a three bedroom ranch and my house is now more than twice the size of the previous house so it will definitey cost more to heat. We also weren't living in the house all of last winter as we gutted it and completely redid it so I can't give you accurate numbers for the entire winter. We only moved in late Feb.

Very true. Just wondering how much cheaper it is that everyone raves about COD. If I have a problem in the middle of the night, I know I can call my company, they will come right away and I don't have to pay a dime. I don't want to have the money in cash sitting around "in case" something happens. We currently have a brand new burner, hot water heater, siding, roof and windows so we are saving alot of money. Our Lipa bill is very low compared to everyone else.

According to my DH we saved at least $800 and that was barely having the heat on until February as we weren't living there. This year we should save at least $1200 by paying C.O.D. versus an all inclusive contract. WE have a separate service contract, so we are still covered for service, that we paid $150 for thus saving over $1K.
