home owners insurance

I've been in contract for about a couple of weeks now and just received a call from my mortgage broker that we have been approved but have 1-2 conditions to get the committment letter. One of the conditions is to get homeowner's insurance. This is our first house, so not quite sure of the process, but do I just call up companies and ask for quotes? Who do you recommend and what info do they need to gives us a quote?

TIA.

Re: home owners insurance

We got the best quote through Met Life...Just call them, and tell them you are calling for home owners...They usually will call you back. You will need to know where the closest fire hydrants are.....to the house.

Yup they will ask you if you have a dog or any pets. If its on the "vicious list"... they may deny you insurance.

I hate to not tell them, but I feel its unfair. My dog is so sweet. I don't think they should not give insurance at all. If they don't cover that portion "if she bites someone", thats fine, but to plainly deny me insurance. Thats not right. IMO

Can't you just tell them it's a mixed breed you adopted from the shelter and you don't know the breeds?

Re: home owners insurance

I have heard stories about them denying, but honestly, have never heard of anyone actually denied. My friend has a Rottie and her insurance company knows and she wasn't denied. I had a Doberman my first marriage and we were never denied either.
I sometimes think that that is like an urban legend type thing.
As far as the insurance, we just called the co. that does our cars and got a combined policy.

The reason why I mentioned this was because somebody actually WAS denied on this site. They made a post about it. It might have been on LIW though... they got denied after they said what kind of dog it was.

Re: home owners insurance

Thanks for the advice.

I guess my other questions is when you try to get a quote from them, is it just me but I feel funny giving them my social. Do you do this?

And I am planning on saying I do not have a dog. Not to complicate things or get myself really upset with an ins co.

I did tell them she was a mix, but I guess it was too late to them because she said she still is part pit. I am so anti liberty mutual now.

You have to. They run your credit in a lot of cases. They also run a "prior claims check" and they need your social for that too.

I definitely didnt have an issue with this cause I am an 807 with no past claims. Chat Icon
