Home-renters....A question....
When there is a problem with your home, who is expected to pay? You or the home owner? Example (not my own personal issue): A pipe bursts and causes water damage. Who pays for the repairs? I'm just curious. We've paid for a lot of things that have confused me. We're renting from family, so the situation may differ a bit, but we've been here for almost a year now and I'm still not exactly sure how this works...TIA!

Re: Home-renters....A question....
They are responsible for all home repairs that happen from wear and tear... its one thing if you did the damage, then either you would be responsible for it, or responsible for paying for it - but if something happens to the house that would have happened naturally, then they are responsible....

Re: Home-renters....A question....
I would check your lease/contract... but IMO, they would be responsible, they own the house and should be responsible for the upkeep and repairs.

I wish we had one, lol. We don't because it's DH's aunt and uncle, which is what makes the situation a bit weird.

Re: Home-renters....A question....
Thank you. I assumed as long as it wasn't something that was our fault, that they were expected to pay. I actually got a response: "Well, welcome to being a home-owner!" Umm, no...not exactly . I wish DH would take care of it, because it's his family...

Any time I rented, the homeowner always took care of anything like that.

Re: Home-renters....A question....
When we rented a home - we signed a lease.
When we had any problems - we called the landlord - told them the problem - we called had it fixed, we paid for it and deducted it from the rent.
The hot water heater broke and this is what we did.
This is also what we did when the boiler needed to be serviced as well.
If because this is family - and you feel this is something they need to pay for - you need to sit them down and talk to them about it. If they are under the impression that you should do it - ask them why - you pay them rent - they own the house. If you signed a lease with them - look at the lease and see if it says you are responsible for the repairs.

This is actually our most recent issue. The boiler needs to be serviced and the company called his aunt, she said it "was up to us" and made them call us. I agree that we need to sit down and discuss this with them. DH doesn't want to cause a rift with the family, because he's worried that it's going to turn into a fight and we of course don't want to lose the house, because well, they are giving us a pretty good deal.

i rented a house for a couple of years. the landlord was always responsible for that type of thing.
imo - you are in a tricky situation bc of the family issue. if they are giving you a really good deal (as in way better than what you'd be paying for market value) they may have assumed that in giving you such a good deal, you would pay for these types of things.
i'm not sure what i would do about this particular situation, but i'd definitely clarify moving forward who is responsible for what.

Thank you. We're definitely paying better than market value, but I don't think the deal is SO great that we can afford the extra few hundred dollars here and there. Especially since it's an OLD house and there seem to be a lot of issues. It seems like every couple of months, something new comes up. Plus, they're making us pay for a landscaper, even though we insisted that we could mow the lawn ourselves. They want the yard to "look nice" so they prefer it to be professionally done. We definitely need to determine who is responsible for what from now on.

Re: Home-renters....A question....
Since we had to pay for oil, we also had a contract with the oil company for burner repair/service.
I would say you definitely need to iron it out.
I know this is off topic but... Having you pay for a landscaper is ridiculous if you're willing to maintain it.

Okay, well we have been paying for the oil, so I guess it makes sense. I just would have appreciated a phone call or something instead of just forking our number over to the oil company and having them call us.
As for the landscaper things. I'm going to try not to break off into a huge vent here, but this has driven me NUTS. We have a lawn mower, we have a rake, and we have the time to do it over the weekend. They think we wouldn't be able to do it, because we're busy with the kids and yet we've managed to make the yard look a LOT better on our own time and with our own money, because we wanted to. We've planted grass seed, and flowers, and had the deck redone, etc. and yet we wouldn't be able to mow the lawn ourselves? It's absurd to me. Yet, his aunt thinks I have the time to pack the kids up in the car and her exercise bike and drive it over to her, because she can't come get it herself. I feel like I'm crazy sometimes, because DH always makes it seem like I'm overreacting. Well, I ended up breaking into a huge vent anyway. Sorry

Don't have any advice, but figured I would bump this for you and say I would definitely have DH mention something to them instead of you doing the talking!

Re: Home-renters....A question....
tricky situation. I rented a townhouse for years, the landlord was charging me pretty low rent, never raised it. He knew I was a single mother. However he was a really busy guy & he had NO interest at all on checking on the house or anything. In all the years I lived there, he was there 3 times & one was the day I moved out. A few times major things went wrong like a crazy termite problem, Broken heating system, broken appliances. I would call him, he'd say do you have money to lay out & take it off the rent? If I said no he'd pay for it, but he always let me hire the repair company, schedule the appointments & whatever. When it came to some of the appliances, I just bought new ones & took them with me when I left. I also had new carpet installed & he took that off the rent. in your case your DH has got to sit down w/them & set a few things straight, even though they are giving you a good deal you need to feel like its a fair situation.

Agreed. Everywhere I've rented, the landlord always takes care of the facility.
