Home sqaure footage discreppancy & Star application

The town records show the home has couple of hundred square feet less than what it should be. There was no appraisal done (it was not required) when the house bought but when questioned about the discrepancy at the time we were assured that some times the town records are based on the square footage the builder submits when building a house and they go over but the town records didn't get updated. House is not brand new construction.

Two issues: 1. On the Star application if we put what we believe is the correct square footage which is different from town records, would we disqualify the for star because of the discrepancy? 2. If we want the town to fix their records, do we get an appraisal on our own and send the town a copy of it? If the appraisal shows the higher square footage,I do realize the taxes will go up. But if it turns out the town records are accurate and we were lied to about the square footage, what do we do? Thanks!

Home sqaure footage discreppancy & Star application

We just went through this as the county assessment website showed our house over 2000 square feet larger than it is. We called the county and spoke with the supervisor he had them come out and remeasure the house. Turns out the person who entered the info from the assessor the first time put a 5 instead of a 3. The supervisor did tell my husband they usually base their data off the external dimensions of the house and won't come and adjust for a 100 or so sq feet. In our case the discrepancy was so large they came out.

We filled out our star application with the correct sq footage but honestly hadn't seen the issue on the county website when we filled the application. So I am not sure if/how it could affect your outcome (this all just happened in the last few months).
