Re: Homeowners-Ever had to call the Nassau or Suffolk Police?

when I was in HS, my car was parked in the street and was sideswiped. We called the police (nassau) and since it wasnt an emergency, they said it would take a whlile. A cop showed up on about a half an hour (i live in farmingdale, and contrary to popular belief on these boards nothing ever happens there and the cops have nothing to do!)

they were nice, but they pretty much thought (i was an 18 year old girl) that it was done on purpose and an ex boyfriend did itChat Icon they were so trying to start drama, guess they were bored! (I had to tell them I had no ex boyfriends and people drive crazy down our block all the time)

Re: Homeowners-Ever had to call the Nassau or Suffolk Police?

Our first apartment was across the street from a small park, and once spring/summer arrived, the kids would hang out way after dark. They were very loud, screaming/cursing, drinking etc. DH called, and they arrived pretty quickly.

Our street was also on a curve, and a woman sideswiped my car. I called the police and they came pretty quickly also.

Oh, this is in nassau.

We used to live in a not so great neighborhood and FH would call the cops all the time to take care of people being loud at all hours of the morning!

Re: Homeowners-Ever had to call the Nassau or Suffolk Police?

In Feb 2005 our house alarm went off in the middle of the night and we asked the alarm company to send the police just to make sure nobody was around. Two NCPD patrol cars arrived within a few minutes of us asking and they searched our property. Turns out that one of the wires that was old broke on it's own but we were really happy with the response.

Another time in the spring of 2004 I accidently set the alarm off and our phone wasn't working properly so the alarm company dispacted police when they couldn't reach me and they were also here very quickly.

And did they stop the noisemakers?

All your replies are great, thanks! Very helpful, sounds like overall they were good.

Re: Homeowners-Ever had to call the Nassau or Suffolk Police?

Not for nothing, its really hard to judge police departments. There are too many varibles to say this is going on and that is going on.... if they were bad, you would of already heard about it .. like how NYPD gets in trouble here or there. Suffolk and Nassau having the highest paid cops in the nation. Is it warranted vs. other areas...no but they do a good job.

For example, my car got broken into in lindenhurst, 1st precient and it took a while for a unit to get to us as there was a major traffic accident on a major road. We were simply filling out a report for stolen items which we could of done at anytime. At the time i was annoyed but when he showed up and explained why nobody came quicker plus calling back to 911 to ask the status of the unit, they stayed on the line for a hwile and explained everything that i could do and what to prepare for.

Your post doesn't include much details as to what areas. Granted, people are repsonding, your not going to move to an area just because of a few post. I would recommend posting areas you are intrested in.

Some areas depending where you live have there on police also .Town of Amityville Police department for example of private police but where i live, i'm in the Town of Babylon living in Lidenhurst. I called cops here twice since i moved here last year about noise complaints and both were resolved.

Cops do everything they can do to resolve what ever happen as they know there job is important. Also, depending on the town you live in, cops may be a littler harder to find as there are more crime and disturbances in certain areas but then again, they staff more units so its really the same...

Good luck in your search

I love having our own police department!! We had to call them 3 times. Fire Chief, Police, and an Ambulance responded in I am not even kidding less then 2 minutes. I felt I hung up the phone and everyone was here. The fire trucks took a little longer but that is understandable.

Re: Homeowners-Ever had to call the Nassau or Suffolk Police?

oddly enough i had to call the nassau county police twice this week! once was because someone hit my sisters car in the parking lot of a shopping center and then left! and the other is too stupid to even mention! but in both instances the police were there very quickly and were very helpful.

Re: Homeowners-Ever had to call the Nassau or Suffolk Police?

We live in Nassau. We had a "noisy" neighbor who let his kids run parties 2 weekends in a row until 2:30am. We called them. They came quick. And actually busted a bunch of under age drinking kids.

It's been fine since then!

Re: Homeowners

Wow, thanks everyone.

Overall general answers are ok with me. I understand that different areas have different needs, things happen etc, but overall, how those who called experiences were is good enough for me.

Two areas we were looking at are Huntington (close to Centerport) and Syosset.

I am just north of Syosset and we live within the 2nd police precinct command area. Never a problem, and I had to call them once for a minor traffic accident on my block and they came right away.

Both areas are super nice and you should have a problem in those towns.

Re: Homeowners-Ever had to call the Nassau or Suffolk Police?

In suffolk, each area is a precinct, and within that precinct there are police offers that patrol areas. So its not like there are two cops driving around for the whole precinct. I used to be a vollie for commack ambulance and we always saw the same cops on calls because that is where they were assigned.

Unless you're expecting the need to call the police department for personal reasons, I can tell you that both areas have very low crime rates. You wont be calling them often.

I've found the precinct (2nd?) in Centerport to be very responsive - and a PITA when we were youngers & trying to get into mischief.

Re: Homeowners-Ever had to call the Nassau or Suffolk Police?

If your close to Centerport the response time should be pretty good.

They hang out at the fire house on 25A a lotChat Icon so they are pretty close if you need them. That's 204's post and I think 206. Always the same guys.Chat Icon

If you are west of the Country Club your Fire dpt. will be Halesight, Greenlawn or Huntington depending on if you are North or South and how far west of 25A you are. All fire departments have great ambulance & fire response times.

It never took me more then 6 minutes to have a truck dispatched from Centerport. Even on a Sat. at 2am. (Centerport is a very quite town)

Re: Homeowners-Ever had to call the Nassau or Suffolk Police?

I'm in eastern suffolk & once my dog set off the motion dector on our central station alarm & the police were there before I was able to get home. I was about 10 minutes away. We also had someone drive there car into the lake on Labor Day weekend, the police arrived very quickly for that too.
I think if you're in a low crime area its a non-issue.

ETS-remember the poor guy walking home from the train in Lynbrook, they have private police & he was robbed & killed right out in the street.
