Homeowners that stay during their open house?

My husband and I went to a open house this weekend in E. Setauket. The home was being listed by a real estate agent. The homeowners stayed during the open house. I thought that the homeowners usually leave?

In any case I was quite uncomfortable with the homeowners. The wife was very annoying and following us around to make sure me saw her walk-in closet. Big deal.

I would like to know if this is standard considering I will be putting my home on the market this spring.

Thanks

It's a personal choice. Some HO's prefer to stick around, while others would rather not be there. I think that if it's a house that you're interested in, the HO is usually more knowledgeable than the REA of the house and can give you some insight

I can understand why people might want to stay, but as someone who has been looking, I so much prefer when the HO is not there. I feel more comfortable thinking out loud and discussing things with DH without them around.

That's so true! DH and I went to an open house where the owner (an older woman) had pepto bismal pink walls EVERYWHERE! and she collected basically everything you could imagine! and everything was just so distastefully gaudy! lol All I kept thinking to myself was step 1 (get rid of the pink walls!) lol

I'd definitely not want the homeowner on my heels while looking. As the homeowner, Im not sure why you'd want to do the work for the RE agent - they get enough commission to do their own work - unless maybe they feel like their agent is doing a good job and they are eager to sell. When my Mother sold her house she was one of those homeowners and was able to give the buyers alot of extra info. IMO it bordered on annoying but they seemed very happy with having the actual owner to point out things.

i think it's best for the owners to leave...

i personally hated going into homes where the owners were there, and realtors tend not to like this either. it's an added pain/stress...

This was one of my biggest pet peeves when I was working. I sold in Manhattan and some of the apartments were quite small... owners always got in the way - including one who was a Playboy model and had no problem walking around in a t-shirt - not to mention the pics she had on her fridge. Chat Icon Naturally, a single guy bought that apartment (I think he thought she came with it). Chat Icon

Yeah, I dont like it either.

Me & DH dont usually even discuss the house until we are alone in the car. I dont want to bash someones home or listing.

It never really bothered me - I think many I went to were there when I was looking. It actually was helpful to ask them questions. I know it was actually very much to our advantage when we got our house too!!

We didn't like it either when the homeowner was home.

Unless it's a FSBO I think it's a lot more appropriate that the owner leave.

I'm surprised that the real estate agent didn't suggest that to them.Chat Icon

And, please take your pets too. Walking around the house when a pet who doesn't know me is there makes me nervous.

DH and I have seen homes where the owners were there - for the most part they all pretty much stayed behind while we looked around. That worked for us because we could go back and ask questions.

When we sell our place one of us will be around but I'd like to do the same - just give the potential buyers space. We'll do FSBO so someone has to be there...but in all honesty I am not comfortable with a stranger showing other strangers my home with all my stuff there. I can't get past it so it seems to be a barrier.

I actually liked it better when they were there. Lots of times we asked questions the agents couldn't answer, but the homeowner could and I didn't feel like I was wasting my time.
