Homes with smokers

We recently looked at a house and a smoker lived there. The whole place really smelled like smoke. It was a total turnoff. Is it possible to get rid of that smell? Did anyone buy a house from a smoker? What did you do to get rid of the smell? THanks!

Re: Homes with smokers

My Dad was a smoker and they purchased air purifiers for their house as they are prepping it for sale.

It took about a month, but you can now walk inside the house and not smell any smoke or see any residue.

I smoke and my house doesnt smell. We have a lot of non smoker friends and when they come here, they are shocked when we smoke because you dont smell it. I swear by Febreze Antimicrobial the one with the orange top. Also you can go to a detail car shop and they sell things that are like a smoke bomb but take the odor out of cars. (vomit, smoke etc) They are awesome too. They are like $7 a can but work so well.

Re: Homes with smokers

this is why we refuse to smoke in our future home. We are both smokers, but only outside. We've been doing it for years, so we'll continue. We are the freaks outside smoking you see in the blizzards.

The guy who lived in the house before us was a smoker.....we ripped up the carpets, scrubbed the walls and CLEANED every inch of the house when we moved in. It no longer smells like smoke Chat Icon

This is why DH only smokes outside. Chat Icon

My dad used to smoke in the house and my mom used to clean like crazy. They have panel in the living room and she used to clean it once a month (papertowels would be completely yellow). She steam cleaned the LR carpet frequently. Other than that I don't really remember. Oh, and the blinds (near where my dad smoked) ussed to have to get cleaned and replaced often.

If you're buying I would think either ripping up the carpet or steam cleaning them a few times would clear that up. Also, once you paint that would help also.

We bought a house from a smoker buyt considering we were gutting it and completely redoing it it really didn't matter.

If the house wasn't in such bad shape and/or I wasn't in the market for a complete renovation job I never would buy a house from a smokerChat Icon

Re: Homes with smokers

If there is carpet you will probably have to rip it out. You can try the febreeze it does work but IMO if you use it often and don't let the smell get bad. Air purifiers also work wonders.
