Homeschooling...

I know this topic has come up before in prior posts..
but today I met a teacher who mentioned that his kids were homeschooled...

I dont know why, I found that a bit strange because I know that homeschoolers feel that "school" is negative for so many reasons...
and yet this teacher was passionate and wonderful in teaching to his class...
and I couldnt understand why he wouldnt want his own children in this environment, learning with others, and everything that comes with "going to school"... and he lives in a top-top notch school district.

What are your thoughts.. just curious...

Re: Homeschooling...

There could be social, emotional, etc. reasons why his kids are homeschooled. Some kids really do need to be home schooled. Maybe his wife is neurotic? Who knows?
I am not pro-home schooling 99% of the time, but I think that sometimes, circumstances warrant it. Maybe it's for religious purposes, maybe his children have emotional issues, etc.

Re: Homeschooling...

hmm, I don't necessarily agree with it - I think school offers a lot more for kids, but I agree, there may be more that you're not aware of.

There are a few on a food allergy board I go to that homeschool their kids....but in those situations, it may be easier for them due to the SEVERE allergies they have. Something like that I could see considering homeschooling. I don't think it's for us though.

I know someone who homeschooled her children for religious purposes. They didn't like the influence that other children had on their children. This included language, clothing, music, etc.

When I first met them the kids told me that they always got straight A's.Chat Icon

Re: Homeschooling...

I had a friend who was homeschooled- She is off the charts intelligent-

I believe once she got to highschool level she was sent to Stony Brook private school- and tested off the charts-

I think she even skipped a grade and grad. early-

It def. depends on the child, parent (or whomeever is homeschooling them), and or circumstance...

In this case- homeschooling gave her a better education than her public school would have...

Re: Homeschooling...

i have and still think about homeschooling my child only because he is definitly not getting a great education and he is brilliant. i don't do it because 1. i work and 2. the social aspect. but there are so many days when my son comes home from school so sad because someone was mean to him that i think well maybe he doesn't need to be social!

I think that's definitely a reason that absolutely warrants it. I can't imagine a child having such severe allergies, a mom must be a nervous wreck each minute away from him/her Chat Icon

I wonder if there are peanut-free schools for those that are severely allergic. For one, I know that the school my MIL works at in Queens is a peanut-free school. (Its a special-needs school, but also serves regular ed until age 5)

I do admire that she's very intelligent, and Im sure she'll excel in whatever road she chooses, but I just cant see the benefits of homeschooling in general... not directed towards her in particular (or you Chat Icon) but there are so many plusses to the whole academic experience..

and now having kids, I cant IMAGINE schooling them at home, while getting everything else done in the house.
I just cant see myself working from home in any field/area. I need to be outside my home and in that "work" environment to be most productive.

and Ive said this before but just want honest opinions, no bashing please Chat Icon

Why do teachers need to get a Bachelors and then pursue a masters, and even keep up with additional credits, take all these workshops, etc. while any mom can homeschool ??? Chat Icon
Not meant as offensive, but is it just me that doesnt understand this? Chat Icon
Who is "grading" their curriculum, planbooks, and telling them what/how to teach, etc...

I do know a few moms that homeschool and asked one a while back about these things. She did tell me that she gets paperwork at the library about what to teach, and the kids go to the schools to take the state exams, etc.

Re: Homeschooling...

But Anna, you have to remember, all families do what they think is right for their kids. I'm not saying that homeschooling is great, infact, I think the opposite, but we all do what we THINK is the right thing. No one would do something they thought was the wrong thing for their child, right? I also know that there is a home schooling "community" on LI where the parents host other children and the kids go to a different house each day to learn different subjects. They even have an orchestra! So, there's always more to the story than meets the eye.

Im pretty sure her mother choose homeschooling for religious reasons.... and she still was socialized in many other ways-

The way I met her was through the church youth group...

She went onto HS and then college- and no socialization issue for her...

As Rachel said- everyone does what they think is right for their child... in my friends circumstance- it totally was the right choice...

Im not sure about how parents go about homeschooling- and who grades their stuffs and stuff like that...

But my friend took all the state exams- and when she went onto HS grad. w/ a regents dipoloma...

Re: Homeschooling...

Very true, ladies. There is definitely more to it than I know, and everyone Ive met that has/does homeschool, they are very good people, strong family & religious values and have raised wonderful children. I just havent gotten to know/ask much about it because I didnt know them that well and I know it can be a touchy subject. ONe mom was talking about it to someone and said she hates when she gets asked about the socialization aspect of it.

Just like I dont understand why they would homeschool, Im sure they cant understand why we send our kids to school Chat Icon

Im curious to know more.
thanks for sharing your stories Chat Icon

Re: Homeschooling...

I know a woman who homeschools her 4 children Chat Icon I give her a lot of credit, she has tons of patience and tries so hard for her children. But when we are at parties or in other social situations, these children are either sitting with their mother having "adult conversations" or are playing amongst themselves while the other children are off and having tons of fun. I feel bad for the kids, but I really believe they don't get too much social interaction with children their own age and it shows. That is one thing I think my child needs, so I could never homeschool.

Oh, my aunt did homeschool my 2 cousins! However, they live in Alaska and too far form the nearest school Chat Icon Once they got to high school age, they did go to HS and then off to college.

Re: Homeschooling...

It's a tough thing because every family is different, but for me - I think that even if a child is hurt (verbally) or made fun of in school, he/she should learn the tools to handle that so he can adapt as he gets older in life. If he's too sheltered at home, not really exposed to the not-so-great things life has to offer, I think he'll be at a greater disadvantage when he's in the real world in HS or college. KWIM?

That's just my thought.

Anna - re: allergies - I think they do have some peanut free schools, but that doesn't help my dd with milk and egg allergies which is in EVERYTHING! But there are many places out there with separate lunch tables, etc so we'll just have to see. I already met with Emily's preschool about all the precautions - I will still send her out into the real world because I know she'll have a WONDERFUL time in preschoolChat Icon
